Sometimes I think that the fortunes in the fortune cookie are a message from God for me. So I keep the paper in my wallet to remind me of it.

Is that a sin? I read elsewhere that if you take fortune cookies too seriously it can be mortal sin, but what if I think it’s God telling me something, not some superstition?

Frankly, I would say that is superstition!

Neil, lot’s of us keep our radar open for messages from God. Finding little inspirations and reminders isn’t a bad thing. I keep the little fortunes myself… especially if they remind of something that I’ve learned in my religious education. God talks to us all the time. That’s very comforting in this crazy world, and it’s not necessarilly superstitious unless we start using the fortune cookies as a means of gaining information or arranging our lives around it.

This sort of thing would only be a sin if you attributed the fortune cookie as a means for communication with God… as opposed to the proper means of communication: like prayer and participation in the sacraments.

It would also be a sin if you attributed the fortune cookie’s messages to forces other than God (and I don’t mean the little guy writing the messages in the cookie factory’s back room). You shouldn’t treat it like an oracle or crystal ball.

Hope this helps. 🙂
