Has anyone else had this happened to them. Friends or someone asks them to go to a fortune-teller, spiritual advisor, etc. Once someone asked me if i wanted to go to this lady she was really good, and could commmunicate with the dead. I said no i am Catholic and thats against my religion. Shes like how i said that one of the ten commandmants. You are worshiping false gods. am i wrong? Thats what i was taught.

When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?

So, you were right in saying that it was against the Commandments.

Most of the time, they are fake and are a con. However, some do talk to the so-called dead.

Something you might want to tell your friend.

In the Bible, Angels are spirit beings. If your friend believes in Angels, then she knows that Angels have free will. God’s Angels can and do guard us and are with us here on earth, created by God to help us with their own free will. Now…who was the first fallen Angel? Lucifer. That’s in the Bible. Ok, Lucifer has free will as well. Does this mean that Lucifer and all fallen Angels are able to be with us, talk to us, take care of us…yes…but their goal is to ruin souls, not help. Therefore, when talking to the dead, the fortune teller is really talking to a fallen Angel, deceiving us. God’s Angels will not deceive us, they help and don’t need our attention. Make sense?

I have, in the past, not recently, and have responded that it is against my religion and violates the commandments as you say, but try not to tell another person she is worshipping false gods, but wait for her to ask for more clarification. I don’t know with certain knowledge how she worships, whether she is going for curiosity or out of genuine belief, and if I want to influence her, condemning her outright will probably not help the situation.

what does come up rather frequently here, even from very pious
Catholics, is reference to local curanderas, kind of folk faith healers who incorporate superficially Christian devotions in more ancient folk healing practices with pagan roots, along with primitive herbal medicine. There I have to tread very carefully, but have issued strong warnings about relying on such people in preference to the sacraments of the Church.

Would you mind me asking how you were so wise to get away from it. Im sure it was harder for you, simply because it being in the family and all.

Thankfully, growing up I was never involved in it. We had tarot cards in the house and some other things, but they were kept in a drawer and my mother (bless her heart) never let us touch them or anything. About two years ago my immediate family converted to Catholicism. Thanks be to God. With that, everything questionable was thrown out.

I have grown up listening to the stories and looking at the pictures of the house they worked in, etc. Luckily, our Lord has kept me very safe from that. I have never really had the temptation to get involved with it. I have seen the immense trouble and lack of peace it all can bring to people though, which is why I am so quick to warn. My grandmother was not a very kind woman. Very very unkind. They all were very pessimistic and unbelievably … for lack of a better word, evil in their actions. I love her as a person and pray for her, but her actions were just… I don’t know how to describe it. Very hateful. Everyone of her children also ended up becoming addicted to something, dying, or marrying numerous times. Sad and very odd.

I truly think (and know) that all fortune tellers are cons. They do it for the money. It is all a big show. But when it comes to the objects they are messing around with … it is like they are playing with fire. They truly are. And those who get involved with it are. There is no way, except by the grace of God, they will not get burnt.

Puzzleannie, I understand what you are saying, But she is a good friend of mine and i know at the time she was trying to help me. At this time in my life i was having a really hard time because i had just lost my brother, but i told her if God wanted me to know something he would tell me. And she knew i was just saying that in my religion thats what i am taught. But you would not believe how many catholics think that going to fortune tellers, at parties, etc are just having fun, and not breaking a commmandment. I myself didnt know when i was a teenager, that going to them meant that. We used to think it was a joke.

I own 3 catholic stores, I had a customer come in one day as pale as a ghost and literally shaking, she went to a fortune teller “for fun” and was told that someone was out to get her and would kill her, she came to me and I told her to get her house blessed and get rid of anything that was given to her by the fortune teller, then go to confession and then I asked her what part of all this was “fun”.

I have a related question. When we were kids, one of my older (non-Catholic) cousins was regularly using a ouija board. Once, when we were at their house… she ushered all the younger cousins into her room and started trying to conjur up our dead grandmother.

When the ouija board spelled out my name… I became terrified and ran out of the room. I was about 12, at the time. I have never before or after had anything to do with ouija boards, tarot cards… or anything like that. This was a ONE TIME experience… and it was not voluntary. It was kind of forced on us. It happened many, many years ago. I have never been interested in any of this stuff… including horoscopes. I avoid them at all costs.

My two sisters were also present, in the room. But I don’t think they ran out. Strangely, both of them have had major, major life difficulties. Is this something that I (we) should talk to a priest about now… after all these years?

No because it all goes back to a sin. You didnt know at the time it was a sin, Now you do. Now if you would do it now, just for fun, its still a sin, see what i mean now you know it is sinning against God. But it probally wouldnt hurt to mention it to Father in confession my motto better safe than sorry. But my opinion your safe.

Years ago someone suggested reading a book entitled “Way of the Peaceful Warrior” by Dan Millman. I went looking for it and found it in the New Age section of the book store. At the time, I knew nothing about the harmful effects of the New Age movement and its connection with the occult. Coming from a Catholic family, we were warned as children not to play with ouija boards and tarot cards but reading these books seemed harmless and there was always a mention of praying to God (or Shiva, or Vishnu, or etc…) which seemed to make it OK. In one year, I had purchased and read as many as 40 New Age books which led me to the ‘I Ching’ which, if you are not familiar, is a type or style of divination. I first found out about the ‘I Ching’ by reading psychology books and biographies on Carl Jung. I couldn’t believe how accurate the ‘I Ching’ was (or so I was led to believe). I resorted to it any time I had a question or a problem to solve. Along came the day that I found myself being controlled by this ‘thing’. It had power over me, I was a slave and a prisoner and I couldn’t do anything without consulting this thing that I would describe as a ‘malevolent spirit’. By the Grace of God, I came to my senses and realized what was going on. That night, I prayed hard. I had found a prayer to St. Michael (Spiritual Warfare Prayer) that was particularly helpful and from that day on I have had no interest in any of that New Age stuff or the occult. I have since destroyed all the books. If anyone ever tries to tell you that it’s harmless fun, take it from me, it’s a trap and once it has you, it will rob you of any hope.

Your story reminds me of a time I was in church. Father talked about how one if the I think apostles, or diciples of Jesus now i cant remember. Anyway he got sucked into it. Before long he couldnt do anything without this woman, He ended up killing himself. The moral of the story was if God wanted you to know what was going to happen why live. Lets face it if we all knew what was in store for us we would all be taking the bridge.

Conjuring up dead relatives is not a good idea. And I realize it wasn’t your fault at all. You were simply there and didn’t want to participate.

Ouija boards are what I call “portals” of the spirit world. And, most often than not, only negative beings come through this portal.

Have you ever experienced another presence with you even though you couldn’t see someone in the room? Have objects in your home ever moved, dropped and been affected in any way?

If not, then you should be fine. However, if any of these things have happened, I would talk to your priest about it and have him cleanse your home with holy water and pray daily, especially to St. Michael the Archangel.

“Fortune tellers” are either con-artists, or they’re possessed or something.

Hi MW. No, nothing like those you mentioned has ever happened in my home. And I did have my house blessed, by a priest… in Fall of 2007. We also keep and use lots of holy water and a few other blessed objects (statues, etc.).

But both of my sisters have had major problems in their lives… and I don’t remember either of them… leaving the room, in terror… as I did.

I too, recently heard on EWTN… that ouija boards can be portals for evil. When I heard about it… I was again, terrified… remembering the incident in my cousin’s house all those years ago. And I’ve tried to approach the subject with my sisters… who are both fallen away Catholics. One of them… for over 30 years. To the best of my memory, they both stayed in the room (at my cousin’s house). I fell away for about 10 years… but returned in 2004. I left the room (at my cousin’s house). Strange coincidence?
