Hello everyone,

There’s a forum that I used to contribute to - and that I still want to contribute to. The only thing is that some of the people there use explicit language, or talk about things that are immoral. For what it is worth, though, the forum is not really about anything objectively immoral, and there is one Catholic poster who I find really interesting (I don’t know his interior devotion, but he’s defended the faith to a certain extent).

I talked with two priests about this - one gave me a biblical verse from Ephesians, which basically said not to. The other one said that it would depend on my intent - whether I’m going there to see the obscene comments, or to talk with this poster and contribute in a moral/prudent fashion. The second priest also said to pray about it - but this seems hard for me. I mean - I pray, and I ask the help of Mary & Jesus throughout the day, but… I just don’t know about the answer bit. I feel that it is alright, and I think I prayed a few short prayers regarding this today and last night.

I guess you have to be a little concerned about the near occasion of sin. Would you eventually get so immune to the obscenities and language, a topics that are inappropriate (if any), that it starts to change how you act?

To me, there are so many places to profess and grow my faith, I could spend all day doing it (especially here if I read every last post and commented on everything I could find an answer to). So, if that is the case, why tempt myself in a less holy area?

Our concupiscence makes us VERY vunerable to sin. I find a great defense is avoid temptation in the first place.

I used to post a lot in such a forum, but I think you really need to limit your exposure to such things. It just wears you down spiritually. I mean yes, you can go sifting through the sewage and may come across a gem or two, but you do need to consider if it is worth all that you are exposing yourself to.

Well I recently went to the forum (after you guys posted your replies) and I can’t say that it really helped me, but I still feel that it would be really beneficial for me to contact this guy… It’s hard to explain I guess, but basically he seems to be a really intelligent catholic, who is interested in Science Fiction, and who may be able to help me find novels/short stories that I can read. I contacted him at his wikipedia user page, however he has quite and I’m not sure if he’ll see it any time soon.

For what it’s worth, though, if anyone here wants to view the Forum it is www.asimovs.com/discus/. And if you want to read a bit about the user who I’m talking about you can view his thread in the Political/Religious sub-forum on pro-life issues in science fiction.
