My uncle goes the the 4 square church in my town. I´m a Catholic from the Roman Rite so to save me from some of the pagan customs that emperor Constantine added he gave me this book to read. Basically it is a book that contains all the bad stuff that anti catholic people say about us. Instead of trying to fight the countless individual claims I was looking for a way to fight the book. Has any one else heard of it?

post on one forum please, and the link is useless for our purposes

start one thread for each specific question, and if you need to, post a link for that specific topic, not a whole book

please read and follow forum rules, your time here will be more fun and more useful if you do

If I wanted to know the truth about you should I ask your worst enemy?

Nope. Never heard of it and I wouldn’t care to read it even if I did.

That hoary old chestnut about Catholicism being of pagan origin has been debunked countless times, notably by our resident expert on the matter, PhilVaz. (So when do we start on your book Phil?)

I would recommend you read this book instead. books.google.com/books?id=FlWAI0JeRcsC&printsec=frontcover&dq=catholicism+and+fundamentalism&client=firefox-a#PPP1,M1 It’s much better researched and historically sound. You can even verify all the assertions in it through research in the library, something the book your Uncle gave you probably wouldn’t be able to say with a straight face.

Sorry for up setting you about the post. My goal must not have been explained clear enough and I´m sorry for that to. My goal was to find information on the book and I asked the question in the different forums to get people of different views to answer who might not go to that forum. Thank you for setting me straight on the rules and please do not take this reply as an insult.

from a review at the amazon site:

…in several places, he will stop what he is talking about and insert an illustration that is completely independent of his topic and poke fun at another belief, making glib remarks and witticisms. At times, I felt as I was being made fun of for ever believing these paganistic rituals had anything to do with Christianity. As an educated man (with a degree in History), I see this as bad scholarship. Most works that try to be scholarly do so by refuting what is believed to be wrong without making fun of those who believe that wrong. Mr White, in my opinion, does not seem to understand that. He wishes to be taken seriously, yet does not organize his work in a concise, intelligent way that leaves someone seeking the “truth” with the idea that he possesses it.
Code:
Doesn't sound like a book I'd like to read.
Anyway, if you Believe Jesus is God's Son and came into the world -- don't you also believe He changed Everything?? Including sanctifying those pagan practices so we could continue enjoying certain customs. I wonder if wearing wedding rings is criticized in this book? Or lighting candles?

There is a line in The Passion of the Christ where Jesus is carrying his cross, looks at the Blessed Mother and says, "See Mother, I change everything."
Wow.

God bless,
Mimi

I definitely need to avoid sites like that… Yeah, I didn’t get it the first time as a Catholic. I still repeat it to myself, “Catholic”… I’ve been back over a year and yet still seem so out of place. I guess it just proves how much I didn’t pay attention. Never intended to be an anti-Catholic for a time but I guess I qualified as that. I need to keep asking Blessed Bartolo for intercession in helping me get over things, and to Mary.

I am sure that your uncle only means well by recommending that book but before you attempt to read the book, familiarise yourself with the Catholic Faith. Karl Keating’s book *Catholicism and Fundamentalism *might be a good starting point. The Essential Survival Guide is another good book and it is available from Catholic Answers. The Catholic Answers website has many excellent tracts on all subjects to help you know more about your Faith. The *Da Vinci Hoax *by Carl Olsen and Sandra Meisel has some good stuff in it about that Constantine nonsense. The website Phatmass - just Google the word - has some good apologetic information.

The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ. Who founded your uncle’s church?

Lood at *The Journey Home *on EWTN or listen to the archived programmes and hear what ex Protestant ministers of every stripe say about why they converted to Catholicism.

Pray for your uncle and when you have finished with your books lend them to him to read.

I’ll second this. I was raised in the 60’s and 70’s in one of those parishes that abused the name of Vatican II to do a lot of wrong things, including tossing out Catechism and teaching us nothing about the Faith. Catholicism and Fundamentalism has been very helpful in my faith journey since I discovered how far off the path I was. I have a suggestion, though. Instead of giving your uncle your copy, get him one of his own. You’ll probably end up keeping yours for reference. I’ve used mine plenty in defending the faith for my little part. I’m no apologist, but I can answer enough so that when I suggest another source to answer what I can’t, they might go.

Also helpful, Keating lists several other good resources. I’m still working my way through some of those listed.

I have heard of the book and a couple years ago I bought the book. The book is Very Confusing to say the least. It was not written clearly. The Author jumps all around on his topics and as was already stated puts “inserts” right in the middle of a topic.

When reading this book, my friendly advise is this. Remember when the Author of this book is talking about Pagan Customs, he is talking about Pagans who worshiped False gods. (the reason they are called Pagan)

In just about anything in everyday life had a “history of sorts”. If I remember correctly even the wedding band and the cross, this man points out as being Pagan.

I must admit I too bought this book, thinking I was searching for more Truths about Christianity. (I’ve only been back home at the Catholic Church for about a year now.)

The Cross had been used years before Jesus was crucified on it, no doubt they continued to punish law breakers in the same way after Jesus died on the Cross. Yet today when we look at a Cross what is the first thing we think of? Jesus. The Cross has taken on a new “meaning” since Jesus died on it. In the same “light” sure some things may have came into Christianity from Pagan Customs, yet what is the meaning of them now? That’s what a person needs to think about.

Hope this helps.

Since I’m not yet catholic, perhaps there is something I am missing about the fossilized customs site. It reminds me of something out of a Jack Chick tract. What exactly is the point?

Hi
yes i’ve read Fossilized Customs, great book, pointed out a lot of things i wasnt aware of, changed my life and opened my eyes. I can highly recommend it to anyone searching for His Truth.
Lew White has done a lot of research over many Years and the good thing about it is you can check on everything he states in his book just as you should question everything told you by a pastor or priest.

Open you mind and seek Truth and you may find.

Blessings

Score one for the bigots of the world!

I can tell by the brief bits stated that he used a bit of used toilet paper by that "great " historian Alexander Hislop who has been derided time and time again for the idiotic nonsense of his books.I guess PT.Barnum was right -there is “A sucker is born every minute”. What is sad is they are willing “suckers” which makes them complicit and guilty of hate mongering. These are the same package of lies that have been passed by the same kind of bigots for many a year-time and place may change but the evil tongue and pen continue to poison unsophisticated minds.
They have much in common with the “Protocols of Zion” which poisoned people against Jews. Lies ,hurt and harm. Bigotry poisons and there are people out there perfectly willing to justify their hatreds by swallowing the poison and spewing it about.-is that what Christians are to do with each other?

juliamajor - interesting i must have hit a nerve. I find it interesting that people can following a faith without even studying its origins i.e what and where that faith originated and who was its founding fathers.
One person on this forum suggests that Jesus christ founded Catholaism. That’s very interesting, i’ve done my home work and found that Jesus founded no religions. He came for one perpose and that wasn’t to start a new religion.
The 10 commandments as handed to Moses on Mt Sinai appear to have changed some what after his ascention to Heaven and that raises a whole lot of questions in itself. To be honest, if you’re not prepared to do the history yourself and check everthing that is taught to you then you might as well be a slave because if you believe everything that is told to you without validating its integrity then you are a slave knowingly or un-knowingly.
Lew White makes its quite clear in his book, “do not take his word for it” do the home work yourself. If you do this you will find the answers but if you just accept what people like juliamajor have to say then you might as well become a drone and just accept everything. Didnt Jesus say to search the Scriptures and be learned to prove yourself worthy?
We all have choices in life and the biggest decision you will ever make and the only one that will affect you for atternity is the one you make regarding your Faith. Is you Faith in Jesus and His Fathers Truth or in what man in the flesh is trying to indoctrinate you with? If you choose to sit on a pew and not question what is put in front of you then you will be held accountable.
Jesus came to uphold His Fathers Word as His Word is Truth but man twists this to suit his own evil desires, desires of the flesh which are money, power, greed, tangable things that are worthless. This is the exact reason why Jesus had run in’s with the Pharisee’s, that were money and power mongerers who wanted to shut Jesus up because he was speaking Truth and the Pharisee’s follow their own Pharisaic law the Oral Law the Talmud also called Works of the Law or MaAseh HaTorah which pertains to the Works of the Oral (Talmud) Law not YHWH’s Laws / Teachings.
If you have access to a copy of Lews Whites book read it and do the homework yourself, it will open you mind but remember you can verify yourself the content by doing a little leg work / History yourself.
Blessings In Yeshua HaMashiach:)

2 Interesting ideas. Dealing with the second one first, I partially agree with you on questioning what is put in front of you. God gave us minds with which to think and I believe that one should intellectually probe one’s religion but not to the extent that one forgoes faith.

On the first point, that of Jesus not founding a Church. I would ask you how you square that statement with Christ’s own statement: “And I tell you that you are Peter and on this Rock I shall build my Church and the gates of Hades shall not overcome it” (John 16:18)

The rational fellow will read this to mean that He is building His Church on Peter. Peter then went on to become the Bishop of Rome and the first Pope.

cthulhubryan - “but not to the extent that one forgoes faith” As i didn’t say anything about forgoing One’s Faith this is just an assumption on your part. What i am saying is, if you do the leg work and study without someone elses xegesis or eisegesis then you will have a better chance of finding out the Truth and especially if a. you are obeying His commandments as handed down to Moses and b. if you are keeping these commandments as handed down to Moses c. praying to Our Father in heaven as he teaches us to and not as the heathen prays to his idolatrous idols of man.

It is in Matthew 16:18 where Yeshua says "and i tell you, that you are Kefa and upon this rock i will build my assembly. If you understand that what Yeshua was teaching from was the Tanakh and the Torah as these were the national constitution of Israel or Canaan at this time as there was no renewed (Brit) covenant (Chadasha) at this time until Yeshua’s ascentoin to Heaven.

So if Yeshua is teaching from the Tanakh what is he teaching? He is teaching the people to get away from the Oral Law the Ma’aseh HaTorah (Works of the Law) and get back to the commandments as handed down to Moses. This is exactly what Yeshua taught his Talmidim (deciples), he taught them the Torah and Tanakh, to go out to the Goyim, the lost tribes (lost sheep or in Aramaic, prostituting lost sheep) of the house / tribes of Israel. This was the starting point of the restoration of Israel and the regathering of YHWH’s people and anyone who wanted to become part of Israel, all they have to do is accept the covenant that by the way is for Li’Olam Va’ed (forever).

All Yeshua’s deciples were teaching the goyim to get back to the Word / Truth / Light / Torah which Yeshua is all of and Shima (hear) and Ashah (do) the Word of Elohim. What is the Word, the Word is Truth and the Truth is Torah as confirmed by the Prophets and Yeshua when he taught from the Tanakh.

Paul was taught at the feet of Gamliel who was the chief Pharisee of his day and what was Paul taught, The Torah and the Pharisaic Oral Law the Talmud. Paul’s duty was to get people away from doing Torah and to bring them under the Pharisaic law / rule. The Pharisees wanted to control the people and the money. Paul persecuted anyone doing Torah without Pharisaic guidence or Halacha or Takanot and when Yeshua came to him on the road to Damascus Yeshua said “Shaul, why do you persecute me” from this point forward Shaul taught against Pharisaic Oral Law (Ma’ashe HaTorah) and taught the people to Shima (hear) and Asah (do) the Word of Elohim.

Once you know His Truth it will set you free- Free from the indoctrinating theology and commandments of Men whom want nothing more than money, greed and to stop you entering the gates of Heaven.

Do your home (leg) work, seek His Truth and do not let anyone tell you what Scripture says.

If you read the Greed it tells you the same thing lawlessness is Torah-less-ness.

Shalom

The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ. Who founded your uncle’s church?
I thought that was an interesting question so I looked up Foursquare. It was founded in 1947 by Aimee Semple McPherson; a woman who had one of her husbands divorce her due to abandonment, had no theological training and who died of a drug overdose. There are odd and mysterious things about that woman (including a “kidnapping” scandal)

The so called fossilized customes are from The Apostles. For example, the Mass is based on the Liturgy of St. James the Apostle and author of the New Testament book of James.

Just because your uncle’s church only goes back to Azusa Street in LA only 60 years ago he criticizes anything older. You might point out to him that Jesus Christ walked the Earth and founded His Church 2000 years ago. So any church founded in the last 4 centuries (i.e. all of the Protestant churches) cannot be His Church.

Protestant churches either started within the last few centuries (and therefore CANNOT have originated with Jesus Christ) or they try to devise somerrupt and convoluted history that says that they “originated on the shores of Galilee”.
