Fostering children by gay couples

How do you defend that fostering children by ay couples is wrong the correct way without putting your foot in it?

Thanks.

You mean without most people concluding that you are motivated by antipathy toward LGBT people and indulging your sentiments because they are based on your religion? In the UK in this day and age, that would be nigh impossible. Probably even among an audience of Catholics.

You are just going to have to accept the fact that you will automatically be accused of being motivated by antipathy toward LGBT people, and with it, have the burden imposed on you of proving that you are not.

You have a tough row to hoe. The track record of those who have gone down that road before you is not at all encouraging.

Don’t know if this helps ‘ Adoption is, therefore, a restoration of what has been lost to a child. Again, it is the child who possesses the rights here, not the adults.’

What’s lost is mum and dad.

Pretty much an invalid argument as the Church allows adoption by single individuals.

I don’t think it’s invalid I’m not saying single people can’t adopt.

According to the argument you presented, adoption by single people does not restore what the child has lost, a mom and dad.

Since the Church allows adoption by single individuals, the argument you presented is invalid if used to argue against adoption by LGBT couples.

What’s lost is mum and dad, restoration as close as possible to a new loving caring mum and dad.

So then what is ‘close’ is the issue.

In which case, it is hard to argue that adoption by a single person is any “closer” than adoption by an LGBT couple. After all, two adoptive parents is a lot “closer” than one.

Like your previous post said it won’t go down well, but our magisterium on about the sin of sex outside the sacrament of marriage doesn’t go down well either nor abortion etc, not an argument that can be won, it’s a matter of conscience based on what we believe.

So probably need to start at beginning sanctity of life’s ie always put child first and understanding god’s plan for mankind to convert someone to understand the catholic perspective.

I presume you mean you are arguing this among non Christians (or other people of the book). If not you could use the argument that we are not to encourage others to sin. This is the same for children living in a non marriage union though which the secular world revels in (ie people cohabitating).
If you are speaking to the world at large then I agree in this day and age, you are most likely going to look like you are against gay people. It’s a weird little quirk society has, they think if you dont agree with everything about someone, you hate them. Odd that. In fact it just goes to show you how right God is in the Bible about how deficient human reasoning is.

I used to work with my country’s foster care system, for a very short while.

From what i see with foster parents, a healthy nuclear family is usually rare. Usually the kid has a stronger relationship with one parent and it’s just a temporary home for most of them. They rarely have a true mother/father relationship with their foster parents anyway.

So if you were to ask me how to argue against it, i can’t, i don’t see the ““harm”” in letting gay couples foster children.

There’s ramifications in the larger scheme of things, I’m sure. But if we’re just talking about what that child will experience, it’s probably not going to be more harmful than the current state of foster parents.

There would be certain cases where maybe a gay couple can be clearly inappropriate. E.g. A young girl with a history of sexual trauma being sent to live in a house with no women around is a bad move. Maybe such arguments will have some weight?

Personally… I would simply say something like the following:

I believe that the best option is to always place a child in a foster home that consists of one mother and one father.

I would equally disagree with placing a child in a home with just one foster mother or two adult sisters living together.

For me, the ideal situation is one man and one woman who are married.

It has nothing to do with the homosexual situation, as I would be equally opposed to all other situations other than a married couple consisting of male and female because I strongly believe it is ideal for children to have a parental example from both sexes.

And yes, while there are many kids who live with only one biological parent, I think when it comes to foster parent: it’s MORE important to give the kids the ideal because OFTEN these children need all the support they can get.

God Bless

I don’t think anyone is going to believe that the OP would be pitching a fit if a child were placed in a foster home with just one foster mother or two adult sisters living together, as much as they would if the child were placed with a gay couple.
It has nothing to do with the homosexual situation
And nobody’s going to believe that. The OP specifically stated that they believe fostering by gay couples is wrong. If they were to try to deflect the discussion away from that, the ruse would be immediately detected.

I thought this is what the church teaches?
In the UK, it doesn’t matter to many people, including many Catholics, what the Church teaches, or not. Your statement will be taken as your own personal opinion.

Trying to pass of the responsibility for it onto the Church isn’t going to work in the UK, or any other Western country anymore. Even in the US, that excuse is way past it’s prime.

You asked how you, in the UK, could publicly say that you oppose gay couples as foster parents without being accused of being motivated by personal antipathy against LGBT people.

Basically, you can’t. That is precisely what by far most people are going to assume what you motivation is, and it is going to be very, very difficult to convince them otherwise.

Expecting people to indulge and tolerate your personal sentiments because they are “Church teaching” is unrealistic in the UK and by far most other Western societies at this point in time.

I get the impression that you are looking for some type of magic fairy dust that you can sprinkle on your argument so that you are not accused of being motivated by antipathy against LGBT people by the general public. Sorry, but magic fairy dust does not exist.

It IS true that appealing to religious beliefs used to work, years ago. It just doesn’t work at all any more.

Unfortunately because the church did not speak up loudly and clearly on the issue of homosexuality over the decades when the secular world was changing its mind, it has lost its moral authority. It seems pretty obvious that the high percentage of homosexual clergy was most likely the reason why the church teaching was not preached.

A very holy Dominican priest I know said the sex abuse scandal has meant the church has lost her moral authority to talk about so many issues in the world today. But especially anything regarding sexual morality, marriage and gender ideology. The world is entering a very scary time where all semblance of a common sense natural law based morality is being lost or openly attacked.

Or being addressed and seen in a different light?

Are you all saying its wrong for a gay couples to foster children? That children are better off in a group home, if a gay couple was their only option for any chance of a home?

and I agree with those who said, no matter how you defendhow you feel, you will look like someone who has a hatered towards gay couples even if that’s not the case.

So it’s better to leave the child in the foster system, rather than allow them to live with two loving foster parents who happen to be the same sex?

Yeah, that’s loving! /endsarcasm

So if someone asked you a question that could be loaded, what is the best response to not answer the question?

I think this is the better question. People who are hostile to the faith are looking to trap you, not actually learn about the faith.

There’s an example of this in John ch 9 of the man born blind. The blind man asked ‘Why do you want to hear it all over again? Do not tell me you want to become his disciples too?’ v27 He knew they were hostile. Then the reply came back that revealed their hearts.

If you have a hostile person asking the question, you need to be very crafty in the reply. Perhaps something like the church has been defending the dignity of the human person from the beginning. From birth to the end of life. Then, ask Why are you asking about gay couples and fostering? Are you interested in learning more of the Catholic faith and God’s plan for family life? You will probably get an earful like the man born blind did. While they are spitting nails, pray Jesus mercy! Jesus mercy! as they go on.
