The lady from the shelter gave us a list of dogs that would be good for an apartment style living. It’s been so much fun looking over them. The hardest part is in the choosing! If we had a house with acres of land, I’d take them all. ;)😛

There were 14 puppies listed! OH MY GOODNESS were they sweet! ❤️ I know hubby won’t go for a puppy, we need them pre-potty trained. But, SO SWEET! :love:

There’s lots of other dogs that need homes too. We are thinking of taking one that is older or has never been in a home. To give them a chance at something special, and having a family for once, especially before they (the older ones) would die.

The nice thing about this shelter is it is a no kill shelter. So, even if the dog never gets adopted, and we move or have babies or whatever, that the dog will not be euthanized. That was really comforting. I’d feel so bad if I couldn’t find a home, couldn’t adopt, and they kill the darling. 😦

The people at the shelter where DD adopted her dog told her (and I believe it) that when a neglected or abused dog finds its way to a good home, it KNOWS the difference and APPRECIATES it!

I agree with that!
 
Just remember most rescues are not housetrained. That is a big responsibility most fosters have to teach them.

Would anyone like to help us pick? It’s SOO hard. We have it down to three that we think would be best. And it also depends on who is there when we go to pick up.

“Bindy”, “Diamond”, and “Hickory” would work out best size-wise, compatibility with our other two dogs, and I just loved their stories…the lady gave me more on them than just what’s listed. They are all sweet as can be! 🙂

**Hickory is just beautiful I think. Diamond really could use and benefit from a temporary home though, as could Bindy.

Yeah…I don’t mind terriers at all. Just lots of energy…kind of like the doggy version of Hyperactivity Disorder. ;)🙂

But Bindy doesn’t supposedly act like a terrier. So we’ll see. 😉

Well I have two more days to decide. I’ll probably come home with someone totally different. ;):p:D

I vote for Diamond. Admittedly, I have a special love for Spitz-type breeds. 😃

That’s actually my first pick too, and my husbands (of the one’s I gave him ;)) We’re all set for her as long as she’s not too big. 👍
 
In this order:

1.) Diamond (she is a mom, after all!).
2.) Hickory (Love her story).
3.) Bindy.

Lord, have MERCY! I can’t STAND the stories about these dogs! HOW can people be like this? The Keesie I rescued was living in my neighbor’s house – they had moved out, waiting to sell. There were 3 dogs, 4 cats and cat **** EVERYWHERE. Twice a week the son came over, slit open a bag of kibble, threw it on the floor, filled up the water bowls and left.

It was HORRIBLE.
 
it’s been my experience that a minority, yet too many, people see animals either as disposable, much like an old stereo or defunct cell phone; or as human beings that don’t need clothes (well, sometimes they go overbaord in that department, too). Both are extremes. Both are sad, in different ways.

😉 In the book (not the movie!!) Mary Poppins, there is a dog named Andrew who is owned by this woman who overhumanizes said Andrew. Andrew, however, being a dog of rare intellignce, not only decides he would rather be a dog, but gives his mistress new rules for his return- including the adoption of another dog from the streeets.:rolleyes:

People don’t often have trouble with overhumanizing pets. After all, the dog or cat is more than well-cared for.

It’s the people that don’t consider the dog, cat, gerbil, etc., worthy of “living thing” status. It cannot care for itself. It certainly can’t hunt from a garage!

My MIL was quite ill about 8 or 9 years back. My SIL was living with her- an addict and alcoholic (both drugs and booze at the same time)- along with SIL’s minor children and boyfriend. My DH and I had to go to court to get a restraining order to keep his sister out of the house, just so we could get some help and clean it.

SIL’s boyfriend had a pit./staff in the garage. Nobody had cleaned the garage in months. It made the Agean Stables look tidy, the excrement was that deep. How the animal created excrement is a mystery, because it hadn’t been fed. It was skinny, ribs showing, and there were three big bags of dog food where the dog could not climb to open them with his teeth. The dog had never been trained, but was not mean (Thank you, Lord!). My husband called animal control while I rigged up garbage bags as hip waders and hosed/ shoveled/ broomed out the garage.

Do you know her BF had a audacity to ask where his dog was when they came to get their stuff? His excuse for the mess and non-feeding of the dog was that SIL’s son, who was 9 at the time, was in charge of the dog, and was supposed to clean the garage.

This was my dad’s reaction when we got into Rescue. Only one of our Rescues had happy stories when they came to us. (“Happy” meaning, “Oh, well, we tried so hard to train her, but she’s a monster; we had to keep her in her cage all day and started feeling bad for her, so here she is.”)

You’ve nailed it, right here. The animal is just a “thing,” like an old toy nobody wants anymore; or it’s a good punching bag to vent frustration. Just my family alone had Keesies that were kept outside their entire lives (in the 120-degree desert or out in the snow all winter), beaten by drug addicts and alcoholics, abandoned in old age because of a benign cyst, were “unsellable” puppies, the list goes on.

Convert, you are doing such a great thing for these dogs. St. Francis is so proud!!
 
Thank you all for doing this wonderful work. My family has adopted three Irish Wolfhound rescue dogs over the years. One of them, was so seriously injured when rescued that he needed a while to recover before he could be adopted out. His fosterer’s care was the beginning of a new life for him.
