Foul words

I was watching the movie Vampires yesterday which features James Wood (I think that is his name) but, any How I noticed that the language was immensly foul and I was wondering if that sort of thing is a Sin? Thanks and God bless.
 
I, too, am often confused by this issue. I am a former professional actress. I understand the idea of poetic license, and the issue of wanting a character to be realistic in nature. I also know that it is quite possible to convey an idea and an emotion without using language that is foul, that breaks God’s laws and otherwise pollutes the air.

I think it is a matter of what philosophy one brings to the arts. There is an artistic argument to be made that the job of a writer and an actor is to portray ‘life’ as it truly is - to expose, if you will, the ‘under belly’ of society and man’s nature, warts and all. There is an equally strong argument to be made that acting is for entertainment and to help one elevate one’s mind and soul and should, therefore, be devoted entirely to the presentation of events that will only do just that.

With that in mind, I believe it is the duty of each artist to decide which is more important for him or her - and then to behave accordingly and to let the audience ‘vote’ with their attendance.

Foul language is a sin, but it is venial (except of course for the Gd$#(& one). Personally i try to avoid hearing foul language because i fall back into using it more frequently. And i think as an actor, if you feel strong language is the only way to convey your character, then it’s fine to go along with it, but one would hope a Christian would be doing a spiritually good movie, which begs the question, why is there a foul mouthed character in this film? Ask Jim Caviezel. He seems like a good kid.

The answer depends on who you ask. For example, at the Catholic college, holy Cross college, they have students participate in a play called the V_monologues on Ash Wednesday, so apparently these Catholic authorities don;t consider participation in such lewd plays to be sinful. Also, they seem to be promoting the thrust of the play which is that a young lady can attain her personal salvation by immoral lesbian relations with an older lesbian lady. For another example, at EWTN, I read that they do not consider that there is anything wrong with the novels of the Catholic priest Father A. Greeley. My personal opinion is that EWTN is wrong and that there is something seriously amiss with language used by Father Greeley which blasphemes the Almighty. I thought that blasphemy was a mortal sin, but apparently, it is thought to be OK these days if a Catholic priest makes money by selling this type of novel.

Not everything that is spiritual uplifting is wholesome. Imagine a movie where a very sinful, drug addicted prostitute finds God. To depict her fallen nature accurately and to also show the extreme metamophises that God created in her life, some cursing would probably be necessary.

I do think that most movies that use cursing are not actually being true to life. I hear much more cursing in some movies then I ever do in real life.

I have never read Father Greeley. Does he actually use the GD word?
