Found a 1962 St Joseph's Missal

Hey all, today I was thinking about an old Missal I remember seeing on my brother’s bookshelf years ago, and tonight I went to ask him if he still had it, turns out he did and it was a St. Joseph’s Missal from 1962. Really fascinating book, I love how they have the collection of prayers and illustrations.And of course the entire translation of the mass in Latin, haha.

I am a college student who attend Daily Mass every day, would I still be able to use the prayers in the Missal that are before Mass and Communion today? Thanks guys!

Great. I appreciate your love towards it. Its good that say those prayers even though it is not necessary. As a Dominican I say always the Thanksgiving prayer after mass written by St. Thomas Aquinas (It is given in the Divine Office: Collins edition)
 
I found one on Ebay for $5.

You can use the prayers anytime. Check out the prayers after low Mass…I still use them after a Novus Ordo Mass. It just does not feel right walking out the door after Mass without a few extra prayer.

The readings and propers could be used as a daily devotions. They will not line up with the New Missal…but are still valid and useful.

Maybe sometime you may want to try to get to an EF Mass…it may be a whole new world of understanding and appreciation for you.🙂

Great, thanks so much! And yeah, now it’s gotten my interest, before I didn’t even have any idea that Mass was still said in Traditional Latin, which I find really interesting. Going to see if any are still said around here in my area. Good to hear I can use the prayers as well!

If you can find a parish or oratory that celebrates the old mass, you’d be all ready to go an experience it for yourself! Deo Gratias!
 
Once you get to an EF Mass and you decide you love the EF Mass (as I do) you can always get a better Missal. I am using a Maryknoll Missal from 1961. You can pick some old Missals up at a good price on Ebay if you watch. The St Joseph is a good one to start with when beginning.

There are also some good instructional videos on Youtube if you want to try to prepare.

I highly encourage you to read through the ordinary of the Mass of your 1962 missal, and check out this Sunday’s readings (this coming Sunday is called “Septuagesima Sunday”).

You’ll see that not only was the Mass changed from Latin to the vernacular, but that most of the prayers were rewritten and the sit/stand/kneel order is quite different, too.

The Traditional Latin Mass is celebrated in over 400 parishes in the USA each Sunday. Maybe there’s one near you.
