I remember once I found $3 while working at a grocery store in the warehouse. I believe it was for one of the vendors that come in because it was next to their pallet, but they had left for the day. I should have turned it in to the office, but I didn’t have money for lunch.

The next day, I lost $4 in that store.

**How is any of that relevant? The money did NOT belong to the person who found it. He has no right to it. What if it belonged to someone who could not afford to lose that USD 50. What if they had been on their way to buy medicine?
It should have been turned in to the police.
In my personal opinion keeping money you find is stealing and anyone keeping money they find should feel guilty about it. **

As I noted above, unless the money is kept in an evidence bag ( to keep ANYONE’s fingerprints from getting on it ), having been picked up with TWEEZERS and PUT IN THAT BAG in the first place, there is NO CREDIBLE WAY for ANYBODY to CREDIBLY CLAIM to be the owner of that $50 bill. No way at all. Different fingerprints would be all over it, and smeared all over it, and no way to match the claimants fingerprints to those on the bill. Any Tom, Dick, or Harry could claim to have lost it. I have lost money when going to buy groceries, and had to buy less groceries. But I have no idea where it fell out of my pocket, and could never prove that it was mine, so I bear no grudge to the fortunate soul who found it. Maybe he or she needed it more than I did (and I myself am a needy person). And no, I wouldn’t dare accuse the person who found it of being a thief.
THAT is REALLY extreme. Seriously. Sometimes in life, its a case of "Stuff Happens.

As I said in an earlier post if unclaimed the money would then go to the finder.
However the finder has NO rights to that money when found. I still contend that such an act is theft.

I wouldn’t go so far as to call it theft- I don’t think the OP really did anything wrong, but I do think this is one of those instances where there was a better choice- which would have been to at least bring it to an office or the ticket counter or something. If they don’t want to deal with it, then fine, it’s yours.

But if I lost $50, I’d be calling the place I lost it at to see if anyone turned it in. And I would hope that someone had.

If I found $50 and there was no apparent way to return the money to the owner, I would thank the Lord and say a quick prayer for the person who lost it.

I believe sometimes God blesses people who are in need by letting them find money. How many broke mothers have been praying about what they would feed their child that night and found $20 on the ground.

Give it in to the ticket office? I would ask if anyone lost money, but hand $50 to a ticket agent? Maybe I’m too skeptical.

One time I was in a drug store and I must have dropped $80 I had rolled up on my pocket. I was so angry because I’m sure it fell while I was on the line which means someone saw me drop it and took it. That is stealing.

But finding money lying in the street when you are not able to return it to the owner is not.

If you feel guilty, put it in the collection basket or something.

I gotta say if I walked in with $50 to my local police station, I would likely be chastised for wasting their time. They have far more serious things to deal with - drunk drivers, burglary, vandalism, assault. As others have said, how could one PROVE that the found $50 was the same $50 they lost? They could not.

Thank God for it, then pay it forward. Do something good with it, which it sounds like the OP did. Sometimes we lose money, sometimes we find money. I’ve done both.

What does how someone FEELS about it have to do with anything.
If you find something that does not belong to you it should be turned into the police. If a claimant can show it belongs to them they get it, If not, or if it remains unclaimed then the finder gets it back after 6 weeks (not 6 months as I previously stated).

Walking along and finding a small amount of money is not theft. If it was a wallet with ID, credit cards, etc., then yes, obviously one would absolutely turn it in. Or if it was an envelope with several hundred dollars, one would turn it in. But a smaller amount…pay it forward!

To keep something that does not belong to you is theft. I don’t see any excuse for not handing it in to the police. Inconvenience or amount of money is not a reason to keep it.

Do you feel that is stealing as well? If the amount is small, a judgment has to be made. In today’s world, $50 is small for most.

But the amount DOES matter!! By saying the amount does not matter, then should the penny or nickel I find outside the supermarket almost every day I go be turned in to police?

Just like “Pennies From Heaven”, maybe that 50.00 bill was meant for you! Or Maybe…it was a test. One day, I attempted to wonder if I should take the money that was left over in a pay yourself machine at the grocery store, until I got my change back, with the numbers. 6.66 cents. I thought that was too strange…and probably a message that I shouldn’t take it.
