I found a bible, finally! It’s a DR Challoner. The language is a little dated for me, and the spelling and some of the books are spelled differently. And the notes are a little sparse.
Can anyone recommend a good commentary, bible dictionary, or catholic encyclopedia?
Thank you and God bless you.🙂

I read The Jerusalem Bible. I like it.
The Navaree Bible has really good commentary.

veritasbible.com has the Haydock Commentary alongside the DR-Challoner. It’s good and traditional. Jerusalem Bible had a good commentary, but get the original version, not the Reader Edition which excises the notes. Navarre is supposed to be good, but is expensive.

Print version?

The New Testament Study Bible commentary from Scott Hahn and Curtis Mitchell is pretty amazing and cheap.

About $20 in paperback, It is pretty big thou. It’s the New Testament only and it looks thicker than most Protestant study bibles, lol.

For the Old Testament, I would honestly wait for Ignatius Press edition to come out.

I have digital editions but if I remember correctly you prefer printed ones and ones that are budget conscious.

I’m happy to hear you found a Bible and God Bless you on your journey.

I have a bible, I need a commentary,dictionary or an encyclopedia. Book please I don’t have
any tolerance for electronics.,But thanks anyways guys!

Wouldn’t you maybe want to pick up a Revised Standard Version Catholic edition of the Bible?

It’s supposed to be the most accurately translated English modern edition of the Bible and was worked on by a panel of Biblical scholars.

I have a copy of The New Jerome Biblical Commentary, but I was able to get it on the cheap for a ridiculous low price; I’ve used it a few times but not that much so I really couldn’t say how helpful it would be but it seems all right.

This is a free Biblical commentary of sorts from the Vatican:
The Vatican Congregation for the Clergy has unveiled a powerful new web site, linking Bible texts with commentary from the Church fathers, doctors of the Church, councils, catechisms, and other magisterial documents.
The Biblia Clerus site links each passage of the Bible-- Old and New Testaments-- with commentary taken from a rich variety of sources. In an introductory note Cardinal Claudio Hummes, the prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, explains that the site provides “Sacred Scripture, its interpretation in light of Sacred Tradition and the teachings of the Magisterium, with appropriate theological commentary and exegesis.”

I also have found the *Oxford Companion To The Bible *helpful, although it is a secular work of scholarship.

I have the three New Testament books of the Navarre Commentary. I love it. A little expensive, but manageable if you buy one book at a time. I would recommend either buying the first of the three books (Gospels and Acts), or read the Navarre Commentary online first to see if you like it:

The Navarre Bible Commentary follows the RSV-CE translation.

Well, I’m with you; I like book-in-hand too. And I like the D-R, I have three of them. No, I don’t know why I have three, I just do.
Best commentary using D-R is Haydock, free on-line, $125 book-in-hand with the bible so probably not what you’re looking for.
I have a St. Jerome Commentary that I like. It’s loaded with great info, but not the best for verse-by-verse commentary.
So, I have no choice but to re-iterate what other posters have already said. The $20 (for more) you would spend on a protestant commentary in the bookstore is MUCH better spent on an Ignatius Press NT RSE-2CE. It really is outstanding, and for the money, there’s no contest.
There is a poster on this site COPLAND3 (maybe copeland3?). He is doing a great service by getting out the footnotes and margin notes from the original D-R, book by book and selling them for 5 dollars. I have the Gospel of Matthew and think it is great; I’ll be looking him up soon to purchase whatever he has done. Something to think about.
