The Church of Antioch is the continuation of the Christian community founded in Antioch by the Apostles Peter (who served as its first bishop) and Paul, who are its patron saints. In terms of hierarchical order of precedence, it currently ranks third among the world’s Orthodox churches, behind Constantinople and Alexandria.

This article states Paul also as a founder of the Church at Antioch, together with Peter.

How is this possible? In Acts 13, Paul is ordained or laid hands on by the elders of Antioch…so this implies Antioch is already in existence.

So how could Paul be ordained at Antioch…if he also founded it together with Peter?

Just because he wasn’t the first founder of the Church of Antioch, it does not mean he was not a founder. He also could be seen as a founder of the Church of Rome in the same way.

In the Chaldean/Assyrian Church, Saints Thomas, Addai, and Mari are all called the founders of the Church of the East, but of course it all starts with the Apostle who was present in the Upper Room.

Saul persecuted the church, but was converted on the road to Damascus. Baranabas was his sponsor. Founded can be used in the sense of building the foundation of the Church, rather than present at the first instance.

Acts 13: 1-3 (RSV-CE)
*1 Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyre’ne, Man’a-en a member of the court of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
3 Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
