Just after 9/11 we were all pumped as a nation and wanted retribution for the terrible crimes that were just committed. We turned to Bush to rally the troops and find the culprits. The rush to Iraq was probably the start of his downfall. I do feel sorry for him because he was given incorrect information and we acted with a knee jerk reaction. The fianancial mess is really a world problem but in the USA most people with these junk mortgages are responsible themselves for the downfall of the housing market. Thousands bought $300,000 houses and making only minimum wages. Its the toughtest job there is to be President and you can't make everyone happy. If Obama falters he won't make a second term. I am a retired fire captain from a large city. I went to many calls that were murders or serious assaults. I have seen decapitations and other body parts cut off in crimes. Its more common then one might believe. Is it extreme? Sure is and very sickening. I also witnessed a lot of ethnic people at emergency calls get right out of control and make matters worse by their rantings. Italians come to mind. Not slagging the Italians but many sure have a way of getting over excited when things aren't going well.

I am surprised you use Bill Maher as an example. Bill is probably one of the most popular catholic bigots and catholic bashers there is outside Christopher Hitchens and the late George Carlin. George was voted one of the best all time comedians in america and he bashed the church as much as anyone, and millions attended his shows over the years.
Bill Maher has his movie out called religiousless. Just google youtube bill maher catholic church or youtube George Carlin Catholic. They slam the catholic church. read the tens of thousands of posts that support their satire expressed about the church. Many people laugh at their antics and many don't take them seriously like so many do on this forum.

There are currently millions of muslims in the USA and more coming all the time through our legal immigration system. Most are good law abiding citizens that keep to themselves. Many are highly educated. I believe the first muslims came to america over 100 years ago. There are extremes in all beliefs. I like happy stories like yours It worked for you. Growing up I questioned everything. Not just religion. Over the years I learned a lot by questioning. I have never been one to accept something without trying to learn both sides or the other side of the story whatever that might be. If something does not seem plausable, I will question. Thats healthy and more should question. The church never allowes you to question. You either believed or you don't. I can remember questioning my catholic teachers in grade 3 or 4 during religious classes. Instead of getting answers the teachers would just shout back JUST BELIEVE IT! Thats not the right answer and I found that all throughout my grade school years that was a big turnoff. The nuns/priests were very ridgid. Do what you are told. This is what my parents wanted me to learn, not what I wanted to learn.
I do believe people take their religious beliefs too seriously. Lets not forget. We are all created equal, we take up the same space and breathe the same air but through family tradition taught by our parents that our way (whatever that is, is the right way) Growing up we had catholics, protestants, and jewish families in our neighborhood. I am sure the protestant families through family tradition brought up their children up to believe that the Pope is not the spokesperson for God. They are taught that Jesus had other brothers/sisters as stated several times in the bible. Catholics don't believe this letters and words are changed to make their story fit. Protestants are taught that there is no evidence that Mary ascended into heaven and that purgatory is not mentioned anywhere in the bible. They are taught this and believe this. My Jewish friends were taught through their family tradition that the Messiah has not yet come. They believe this as strongly as catholics believe he has come. Who are we or who is anyone to say that their way is the right way? We all want to believe that and every group has their experts who challenge others. You and I could have been born into a different religious family and we might not have the same views we have today.
Our families believed their faith, not by doing research or educating themselves in finding what faith might be right for them but only through cultural family traditions. My parents were strong catholics only because their parents were and so on all the way back. My parents and grand parents never opened their minds to learn about others. We were catholics thats it! A lot of bigotry was displayed by our parents (maybe not yours) but I remember many adults making negative comments about people of other faiths. Just pure ignorance and bigotry..
I went to a public high school. The best choice I could make. I stood side by side with protestants, jews, atheists, humanists, jahova witnesses, etc. We never argued about religion or why some religions have funny beliefs. We all became friends and learned about each others beliefs and never said "I am better then you because......
You have to learn to adapt to accept other beliefs because once your out in the work force and getting life experiences you have to learn to adapt and accept people from all backgrounds including religious and cultural. You might not agree with their ways and they might not agree with yours because you were taught something else, if we can't get along and accept people for who they are, not what they believe through their own family tradition then the world will never be an accepting place for most. I believe God created all of us equally. No one better then the next. I disagree with christian teachings that some people are less because they don't believe.
If you believe in a heaven and hell so be it. At my stage of life I don't. I believe something because I believe it not because I just want it to be true. i don't have to see something to believe it, it just has to make sense to me.
