I stand corrected: the Code of Canon Law of 1917 abolished all the anathemas of previous councils and kept only those that are specifically laid out in 1917. (Wikipedia: Anathema)

The Eastern Church, Catholic and Orthodox still keep them.

But the change was too late for those 19th century abolitionists.

It depends on the circumstances. If a person has a greater inclination to be brave and find his freedom instead of finding humility, than that slave could escape. Everyone is working on a different aspect of their spirituality, and you can’t treat these matters as black and white any more than do with people. Finally, it said not “to despise his master and to run away from his service”. Running away when it would be good for the master as well would be a different story

Slavery within a species is different than between God and angels

Its like turning the other cheek and giving away your cloak… those apply to certain spiritual situations

If slavery is wrong, God having angels is wrong. Angels are the slaves of God. You condemn slavery–your are condemning God for having Angels. Angels don’t have a choice not to serve God.
As silly as this whole conversation is, well parts of it anyway- I want to point out that the Angels had a choice of whether to serve God or not. One-third of them decided not to, we are told in Scripture.

This is interesting:

Contrary to what people usually say, the Pope seemed to stay out of the controversy by first calling him President, but then saying that he hoped the “people of America might again enjoy mutual peace and concord”

We have to remember that the rules of social justice (Leo XIII ect) apply in cases of indentured servitude, so it is a red herring I think to call that slavery. You can’t run or ruin someone’s life based on an agreement he made years before
