Hollywood took another step toward America’s vast and apparently growing Christian audience on Tuesday, as 20th Century Fox unveiled a new division, FoxFaith, that will release up to a dozen religious-oriented films each year.
Many of the films, with budgets ranging from about $3 million to $20 million each, will be released straight to DVD. But the studio said that at least six a year would be released nationally in theaters by an independent distributor working with Fox, starting on Oct. 6 with “Love’s Abiding Joy,” a western based on the novel by the Christian writer Janette Oke about a couple facing the trials of life on the American frontier…
The move reflects the growing weight of evangelical Christians in popular culture. It is the latest in a series of incremental steps taken by Hollywood studios in recent years to capitalize on the Christian audience. Source

I’m a little torn about this. Although it will be good to have Christian faith as a more prominent player in the Hollywood arena of ideas, I fear we’ll see more prominent promotion of Protestant theology at our expense.

I see nothing wrong with it. I doubt that means there will be Catholic bashing and such on that station.

Of course I may be a bit biased in my opinion cause I love Jannete Oke books!

Anything promoting Chrisitanity and giving us better things to watch then filth is good! We’re all brothers and sisters in Christ and need to stop bickering and labeling just because there are a few things we disagree upon. Thats one of the many reasons non-believers can’t take us seriously, which I don’t doubt them for.

Nitpick: FoxFaith is a film division, rather than a cable channel. Although I wouldn’t be surprised to see them start such a channel before long.

Great, Satan’s spawn Rupert Murdoch has decided he can make money off Christians by making religious movies! He has chuttzpah, I’ll give him that.

I, too, doubt that there will be anti-Catholic material. Most Protestants and Catholics are aware that bashing one another’s denominations isn’t getting us anywhere, and is counterproductive, especially given the culture wars. Even anti-Catholic Fundamentalist Protestant writers have had to tone down and otherwise disguise their anti-Catholicism.

The danger with FoxFaith is that it could present a “sanitized” politically correct Christianity, that promotes liberal “morality”. It would not be the first time the media has done this.

My fear is not so much explicit Catholic-bashing, as misleading theology which minimizes or rejects the importance of tradition, sacraments, etc.

Fox huh?

Why do I get the feeling the “Left Behinders” just hit pay dirt 😉

exactly. And, lol, left behinders…

Since I am still boycotting Hollywood, this is not an issue with me.

Interesting. I was just reading that final Oke book and there’s a slight bit of anti-Catholicism in it. Missie, the main character, is trying to convince her friends Maria and Juan (presumably Catholic) that it’s OK to come worship with them even though Juan feels like their worship is contradictory to his and he doesn’t want to confuse his children. Somehow I doubt that will show in the movie version (or at least I hope not) since they were very unlike the books. I think I like the movie version better but I’ve only read the final book in the series.
