Fox's 'Family Guy' goes too far; file a complaint with the FCC

Don’t complain, don’t write the FCC… if you don’t agree with it, turn it off, don’t watch it. That is how capitalism works. No ratings, no big commercials, no money, show goes off the air… it’s that simple.

However I would steer clear of judging others on this board or anywhere else though. God knows our hearts and our actions and more importantly our WHYS. There are definitely thing we all can agree on that are sinful, but other areas are gray and what is right for you might not be right for someone else.

Joe
You and I own the airwaves. I object to the use of the public ariwaves for programming detrimental to the common good.

I will continue to send my complaints to the FCC (who works for me) and let the sponsors know too.

Guys, you should *never *take Family Guy seriously. I mean it.

It’s a cartoon designed soley to anger and insult you. They want you to get mad. And apparently, they’re doing a great job of it. :o

Ironically Yours, Blade and Blood

I have a suspicion this show doesn’t mock other groups the way it mocks Christians. Yes, we can shut the program off, but by watching this stuff…it increases ratings for the show, and thus the show will continue on. If people stop watching shows, no phone calls, letters, emails, or anything need to be sent to the FCC or anyone, the show just dies a natural death. lol

That being said, I’m not a prude when it comes to watching tv. I just refuse to give positive ratings by my viewing, to a show that mocks God, Jesus, Catholics, priests, etc etc…

By far, Christians are on the chopping block so much more than any other faith. Not that I want others faiths to be mocked…ha I just don’t see the need to give my viewing time and thus ratings, to a show that mocks Christ.

It’s such a bore, all this Christian mocking. SNL, Family Guy, South Park, Hollywood movies, etc etc…It’s just so old, but I guess when ratings are slouching, some top exec:rolleyes: says…hey, let’s mock Jesus, that gets us some ratings.

How sad.
I’ve seen every South Park episode, and I can assure you they mock other groups just as much as they mock Christians. The episode cartoon wars was all about how Muslims expect their religion to be treated by a different standard. Other groups they’ve mocked are pro-choicers, feminists, scientologists, radical atheists, gay rights activists, PETA, Mormons, and global warming alarmists. They don’t make fun of all members of the religions, just the zealots. South Park’s number one enemy is political correctness. They are equal opportunity offenders who provide comical social commentary.

I’m aware that they mock a variety of groups. It’s intriguing to me that mocking groups…even if it IS funny…is entertaining in our culture. I remember when SNL had skits on Osama Bin Lden, maybe about a year after 9/11…‘mocking’ 9/11 I guess.🤷

In looking back at that skit, I remember thinking…humor sometimes can heal sadness…but there is a difference between an idle wisecrack to get someone to smile who has been very down, and writing a satire to mock 9/11. To mock gays. To mock Christians. Muslims. Jews. Scientologists. The homeless. Gay people.

I think humor has degenerated into this mockery of others. It is no wonder that bullying is at an all time high in our country.

Maybe we all inwardly dislike some type of group, and the show cleverly points it all out. I don’t think the show is stupid, rather it’s been brilliant in getting people to let their guard down about mocking people, and turn an immune ear to insults. So, when we’re mocked or misrepresented in the news…newspapers…etc…why should we be outraged?

Maybe all the newcasters need to do is say …you know, I’m just trying to be funny, right? 😉

And that suddenly makes the mocking ok.

I see it as learning to laugh at ourselves. The creators of South Park are big at using humor to expose moral dilemmas in society. They do it in a crude and offensive way, but the moral of the story is usually pretty thoughtful. They do mock all groups but at the end it is usually bigotry that is mocked. I think it gets problematic when one group is scapegoated and held to a different standard than others. That is where South Park is different than shows with a left-wing tilt. They expose the ridiculousness in all ideologies, beliefs, and individuals. I think an episode pro-lifers would appreciate is Kenny Dies. It really spotlights the casual way the abortion industry treats life. Death Camp of Tolerance is also great for those fed up children being exposed to morally objectionable behaviors in the name of tolerance.

When you advocate for censorship from the government then you are treading in dangerous waters. Do you really want to increase the government’s (unconstitutional) power to decide what is offensive and what is not? Will you still feel that way when the government tells you that EWTN is offensive? Or instead of the government maybe you want the majority to decide. Catholics are not the majority. What about when the majority decides that EWTN is offensive?

If I may suggest a more effective solution: change the channel. Write (or call, or email) to Fox and its advertisers and let them know that their programming is offensive and you are going to try to hurt their pocketbooks until they change it, but please don’t call in the government.
This has nothing to do with Catholic Dogma. A baby eating cereal covered in horse “stuff”? That’s absolutely disgusting. This isn’t a show that’s on some cable channel. We’re talking on regular broadcast tv. Don’t play that game with us. This is absolutely disgusting and perverted regardless of your religion or the lack thereof.

I’ve never seen Family Guy. Are they equal opportunity offenders like South Park? I’ve heard the creators are Democrats while South Park’s are Republicans, so I’m guessing FG would be more likely to single out Christians.
The ONLY group they have not poked fun at or parodied are Atheists. They’ve poked fun at Blacks, Hispanics, Homosexuals, Europeans, Jews, Catholics, Mormons, Christians in General, Democrat and Republican politicians, Polynesians, Asians, Muslims, Arabs, and so on. But NEVER Atheists. Says a lot about Seth Mcfarlane doesn’t it?

An American “right” to complain about a TV show? Come on! Let’s get serious folks. Okay, you write the FCC and the person who receives the complaint is a homosexual and states same when he/she replys thus making you file a complaint to his/her supervisor. That person basically states “Thank you, we’ll look in to it” and you never here from the FCC again. So you write your representative…opps! He/she is a homosexual also! What to do!? Write POTUS! He’ll take care of it! Nope! He’s for everything so he doesn’t upset any one group…
now let’s look at some serious issues…

Genocide
Abortions
Homeless
War
Economy

Don’t we hvae enought to worry/pray about than what happens on a cartoon, which by the way, you have the freedom of choice to turn off.
Constitutional rights are there for a reason. Many folks have served/fought/died so we have those rights.
If FG offends you, why not donate some time at the local homeless shelter during that timeslot on TV. A previous poster was correct (sorry I can’t recall who) but if one complains too much…one might lose what one has because others might take up the challange and try to get other shows off the air. If all else fails…watch PBS…no cable subscription needed for that…read the good book…talk with your family…

Blessings

I’m quite allowed to judge other’s actions. This show is not redeeming an ANY way. None. Period. There is no way a Christian should watch this show. None. Period. Can you choose to, certainly. But you have to stop complaining about the moral decay of society if you do, because you are helping it along. TURN OFF THE TV.
That’s kinda too much…it’s JUST a show
😊

I think they did make a joke about atheists…

I agree with you here, the motivation behind the mockery. It isn’t malicious so to speak…I don’t disagree, BUT…we also have become a bit too immune to the world’s ridicule of our faith. But, I think we need to be able to laugh at life, ourselves…I certainly don’t take myself too seriously, and I’m not suggesting we lose our senses of humor…

Good discussion, everyone.

How funny you mention PBS. LOL! I used to love that station…wow, they are anti Christian, and pro choice, if ever there was a network. New age ‘religion,’ etc…I was so surprised…whatever happened to Sesame Street and Mr Rogers? It’s so different than that, now. :o I tend to watch controversial shows though, however, so sometimes, I tune in. But, they are not the wholesome network they once were…definitely a bias slant towards the left. But, I think that they are less scripted…so I feel like I get a clearer picture of democratic views from PBS. 🤷

I fight all the big evils too. It doesn’t take all that much to complain to the FCC.

If you want to solve problems look at root causes. I submit this type of programming is dumbing down the masses and is a kind of dope that keeps us senseless.

It is my right to complain and I will continue to do so.

And if you want to discuss censorship I will start by asking what Catholic programming is there on the networks?

I have no idea.

People are just crazy about that. Mock something that doesn’t effect me, LOL, mock something that effects me, NO! TOO FAR!
🤷

That’s it! You’ve hit it on the head…and it should really stop. I don’t like mocking of any group, though…I was always the girl back in high school who defended those who were being bullied. 😦

There’s so much good humor out there, without mocking.

Anyone old enough to remember All In The Family? :o They were what we now call totally not PC, but Archie Bunker, the main character…didn’t mock. It was funny, but because you knew how narrow minded Archie was. I can’t imagine a show flying like that now…so now what do they do?

Make cartoons. So cleva, those media execs. 😉

I agree 100%

So, you watch it because…??? I don’t hide in a prayer closet (I realize this isn’t directed at me, but you are saying it to me) and I think a first step, is stop praising shows that devalue our faith, and God. Stop watching them. Stop buying from the advertisers of these shows, and on and on…
But why stop there? Why start limiting what we watch while other, much more atrocious evils, are being permitted by our purchases and consumer behavior? I mean, we ought to follow this premise to its conclusion, right?

For example, Time Warner has a co-venture with Hughes Electronic Corporation in DirecTV; HEC merged several years back with Raytheon; Raytheon Industries produces general dynamic missile systems, plus tomahawk cruise missiles, etc. My point is, of course, that anytime we purchase anything produced by Time Warner then we are indirectly supporting the military industrial complex across the world. And it’s not been all justice for all…

Time Warner is also produces pornography.

Anytime you buy a CD album released from Atlantic, Rhino, Elektra/Sire, Asylum, Reprise, Warner Bros., American, Maverick, or EMI then you are effectively contributing to the pool which produces pornography.

I’m just carrying this to its logical extent. If we’re going to avoid FG because it insults our values, then we best be boycotting a whole lot more. (Not to mention writing the CEOs of a whole bunch of companies explaining that they’re producing such material which insults our values…)

I mean, seriously, this outrage against a show which serves as perhaps the best contemporary social commentary is, in my opinion, ridiculous. And, I re-emphasize, it is a social commentary. If you don’t like FG, then be that light of Christ which confronts the problem, not the symptoms.

“what have you done as a Catholic” ? Do you think talking to others about Christ will have no effect on them and their entertainment choices?

When I send an e-mail to the FCC, I am not telling them I can do their job better than them, I am telling them: there is offensive programming out there. Just becuse the network allows it, just because sponsors pay for it — does not make it good or wholesome or acceptable or normal.
Okay, and assuming that every employee at the FCC lacks common sense, I suppose you would be somewhat proactive in telling them such. Again, though, given that Genachowski is pro-neutrality, then I’m going to take a guess that he has a fairly good idea of what Catholics vs. frat boys might consider wholesome, acceptable, or normal.

I could be wrong.
What Catholics have got to realize is that compared to cartoons from the 1960s, Family Guy is totally anti-God and anti-functional family. There is no “truth” in it. It needs to be called what it is - sick. But too many Catholics have gradually been poisoned by the “Hey. It’s just a cartoon. Or, hey, you can just turn it off.”
Reality check: Too many Catholics are living like pagans. Too many Catholics have accepted too much secular nonsense and are living by it.
Being proactive means re-evangelizing the United States, including internet forums like this one. All Catholics should know that “Family Guy” is not just a bad choice for Catholics but a bad choice for everyone. And the Federal Government needs to hear from us as well. We are citizens and we have the right and duty to speak up.
But who’s going to listen? If you, the pious, sensible Catholic cannot point to the concrete something that makes FG the anti-God, anti-functional family cartoon that it is, then who is going to listen to you? If you can’t provide solid proof that FG is what you say it is (rather than just secular nonsense), then you’ll be written as another overly pious Christian with the intent of making others’ lives miserable just so that you (with your God) can live conscientiously.

I take no issue with re-evangelization, but the manner which it’s being presented in this thread turns me off as a devout Catholic, much less somebody who long ago left our pews because an aversion to apparent fundamentalism.

You really cannot get the full effect of the show’s portrayal of Christianity without watching the video or reading our review. You will hear the tone and sarcasm very clearly.
I suppose I wasn’t supposed to laugh while watching that, huh? The look on Stewie’s face when he realized that the milk might not be milk was hilarious. And it didn’t say that it was - he said “Not all the milk in there is milk”, and all the bottles looked the same.

I find Quagmire far more offensive. I think the only episode (of the ones I’ve seen) that really upset me was when Stewie tied up one of the cheerleaders and Quagmire later found her, tied up and just wearing her undies, in the girl’s washroom, and said that it was his lucky day. Joking about raping an underage girl crosses my personal lines. However, I know that he’s supposed to be offensive, just like the creepy old man who keeps trying to put the moves on Chris.

But, like some have said, if you don’t like it, change the channel. Or turn off the tv, because there’s probably stuff on most shows that you won’t like.
