First, I take no offense, but just to clarify, my forum name is Havard (after one of the Inklings.)

AuroraB did a great job of highlighting some of Paul’s thoughts on the law. The Lord invites us to reside in him, but to reside in Him, we must know him. We cannot sin if we do not know sin, however ignorance is not an option. As Paul points out, the Lord invites us to know the law so what we may repent of our sins, and be renewed. This is a wonderful thing!

Now, with respect to evangelization, Fr. Barron uses the example of baseball. It’s clear that it is the exuberance of the game that attracts people, the joy of playing the game, not the rules. But at some point, if you actually want to join in the fullness of the experience of baseball, you are going to have to learn the rules.

If my memory serves me, the reference to: the sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law, is Paul’s reference and further explanation to a section in the book of Hosea. Hosea dealt with a sinful and immoral people who disobeyed the law that comes from God. They worshiped false gods and practiced wild sexual promiscuity. Their obvious disobedience of God’s law convicted them. It was the power of God’s law that concretely revealed that their actions were indeed sin. Their “sin” (and ours for that matter) was the sting of death (as the scorpion’s sting would inject the poison and cause loss of life [Hosea]).

But “Death has been swallowed up in victory” thanks be to God. Christ has defeated the finality of sin and has reestablished our “relationship” with God. True, sin continues to be with us because we are not always obedient to “the law” but we are now privileged through the merits of Christ to reconcile with God in humble contrition and receive God’s most loving mercy, grace and given yet another new beginning.

Oops! My brain filled in the extra “r”… sorry, nothing at all offensive intended! Where would be a good forum to discuss the reason/effectiveness of having a “new” law to follow? I’d really like to explore this, given this topic’s relevance to evangelism/Christian unity, etc…

Well, if it’s mainly pertaining to evangelism, I’d say here, but if you’re exploring all sides of it, I’m not sure. There’s a moral theology section, but not a general theology section.
