Hi all,

I’ve been checking out Fr Barron’s Word on Fire series and website, and I feel that he’s quite a good speaker. However, I’ve been overwhelmed by people posting comments on his videos commenting on “Fr. Barron exposed”, and all sorts of references to obscure controversies that he’s supposedly involved in. Can anyone fill me in on all this hullaballoo? I tried finding out myself, but I got lost in the huge sea of short, inflammatory, emotional comments.

Thanks

I have searched to see what I could find and it seems to me the same old anti-Catholicism from people who know very little about the Church and those who seek to destroy the Church from within and outside. Go on any faith Youtube clip and you will see all sorts of unfounded comments and lies. Sad to say even some people claiming to be Christian (including Catholics) are anything but. Suggest avoiding the raving rantings and gossips and search for a proper authentic source.

I checked some stuff via google and found one set of complaints about the fact that he would not support a straying Nun actively trying to damage the Church. I hasten to add a Bishop’s Conference also issued concerns and warnings about this Nun’s book which contains teachings that are her own personal fantasies and not the reality of the one True Faith. Another set were simply because, yet again Father Barron WILL NOT move away from the teachings of Christ and validate secular views and wrongdoings.

From what I read, it is clear that his mission is succeeding and satan is working to destroy him.

I would suggest praying for Father Barron as he carries out the mission and vocation God called him to.

The only controversies I know about are pretty much petty ones. There are some people who disagree with Fr. Barron on the interpretation of Aquinas and seek to disparage him because of their own biases and ideologies. The other one has to do with his involvement at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress. It’s the old guilt-by-association “hermeneutic of suspicion.”
Personally, I’m excited that Fr. Barron is the Saturday Keynote speaker at the RECongress next year. 😃

I have Fr Barron’s Catholicism series and follow him online whenever possible. He is a gifted speaker and a top rated Theologian. He is also the director(? not too sure of title) at Mundelein Seminary in IL Yes, let’s pray for Fr. Barron as the devil is enraged over his popularity in teaching the truth about the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church founded by Jesus Christ and guided by the Vicar of Christ through the intercessioin of the Holy Spirit.

I really enjoy Fr. Barron’s video clips (YouTube). I think it really boils down to the fact he seems to be smart and well versed in the Faith. He sticks by the Church’s teachings and Christ’s teachings and that bothers a whole lot of people. People don’t seem to want truth these days and they love to tear down what is good and true. If someone can cloud or confuse something than they have caused a rift for someone.

I agree with the other poster who said we should pray for Fr. Barron as I am sure he is attacked on a regular basis. :gopray2:

I agree.

“The foe and enemy of the Church despises and passes by those whom he has alienated from the Church, and led without as captives and conquered; he goes on to harass those in whom he sees Christ dwell.” (Saint Cyprian of Carthage, Epistle 56) and “Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.” - Matthew 5:11

Augustine- Aquinas - Barron

Future Doctor of the Church

Love Father Barron !😃

One of the greatest theologians of our time. I could see him becoming a saint in the future.

He is fine as far as I know. The only problem I have with him is his position on saying that we don’t know if anyone is in hell or we can hope for universal salvation.

Other than that I think he is pretty great and I enjoy listening to him.

Of course we don’t KNOW that anyone is in hell (although we are pretty sure) and Barron I don’t believe holds this position based on both his Catholicism series, his YouTube and the fact that such ideas make his ministry pointless.

We should all hope for the worlds conversion.

I wish you were right but I’ve seen him talk about it and I’ve read his writings on it. I’ve even spoken to him about it myself on youtube. He just wrote an article against Dr. Ralph Martin’s book, ‘Will Many be Saved’. You would think it would make his ministry pointless, but who knows how he thinks. Theologians who have espoused this ‘hope’ say that evangelization is more about making people’s lives better than about saving their souls since to them, being saved is easy and a VERY broad road.
I know people are in Hell since Jesus Himself said so. Specific people, not really, although Judas is a sure thing since Jesus said it would be better for him not to be born. (makes absolutely no sense if Judas ended up in heaven) As for hoping everyone is saved, it isn’t a thing to hope for, since again, Jesus Himself said people would go to Hell. Very clearly. Maybe we could hope that everyone living right now would be saved, I don’t have a problem with that as such, but I do have a big problem with hoping everyone who ever lived would be saved since it goes against what Jesus said.
I’m not sure if Fr. Barron actually hopes that everyone will be saved in the end but I know he espouses the idea that there will be more people in heaven than hell, which also goes against what Jesus taught.
Like I said though, I like Fr. Barron overall and I haven’t seen anything he says as being problematic except for that issue.

Yeah I read that article.

I personally believe Dr Martin’s position. Like Barron said, it is the position of the Dr’s of the church Aquinas and Augustine, arguably Jesus, and many others.

If Barron holds a truly universal position I must disagree with him, but my initial reading was a call to a more centralized position, perhaps less confident in either position. Simply meaning that you know and understand the reality of hell, but hold a hope for as many saved as possible.

It’s a more hopeful and possibly spiritually uplifting position. Either view you hold though, as long as you maintain the reality if hell which Barron does, is relatively unimportant.

The key is hell exists and you don’t want to be there. Whether there are billions there or millions is relatively unimportant to the Christian walk.

In my understanding a true universalist denies hell.

I think that reading those comments is a waste of time and can be quite disturbing, because those who are orthodox are always attacked by those who are not.

So enjoy Fr. Barron’s videos and don’t worry about the accusations.

I can agree with that to a certain extent. However, I don’t think there is any good in denying that Jesus said the road to Hell is broad and many take it, but the way to heaven is narrow and few find it. No matter what, He said that for a REASON and it is true. At the very least, I think that reversing what Jesus said here and saying the way to heaven is broad, which Fr. Barron says is ok to think, is a destructive position, gives people false hope, and lulls them to sleep. In my personal opinion I believe 100 percent that taking this position has resulted in lost souls. In his book, Ralph Martin talks a lot about the destruction of the missions and evangelization directly caused because of these types of positions. I don’t say numbers, all I say is that we must believe what Jesus said: The road to hell is broad and the road to heaven is narrow and few find it. That is key.

I never said Fr. Barron denies hell. He says that it is ok to ‘hope’ in universal salvation, or at least that most will be saved. That is my problem, because it completely reverses what Jesus clearly and plainly taught. Not to mention that St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas taught that most will be damned, and the vast, vast majority of the Saints and the Tradition of the Church has always taught the same thing. It is not something that can simply be reversed now. I don’t say it is a heresy, or accuse anyone of it, but it is wrong and destructive.

I want to say again though I am not attacking Fr. Barron. I think he does a lot of good, a lot more than I could ever do! I think almost everything he says is smart and good teaching. It is just this one issue I have a problem with, but it is a very important issue.

Fair enough 🙂

I concur. There is absolutely no reason to waste our time following up on and investigating petty gossip and baseless accusations. That’s a rabbit hole to avoid if ever there was one.

I find that the less time I spend reading comment to articles and videos, the better off I am. 😛

Michael Voris blasted stuff Fr. Barron said concerning hell in the most recent episode of The Vortex. Mr. Voris considers Fr. Barron part of “The Church of Nice.” I’m not going to post a link to the episode since it’s not appropriate for CAF, but is it safe to think that Mr. Voris was too rough on Fr. Barron in it?
