I was listening to Fr. Corapi yesterday talk about a story from his past but this time he went into more detail. It was about a Jewish woman he used to date, she was very beautiful and they used drugs and partied together. After he hit bottom and came back as a priest, he saw her, looking close to death on a sidewalk. He thought she had months left. Years past again and he was given a talk in a Carmelite convent in CA. The prioress asked him to meet her in the parlor at 2 and he did and there under a veil was the girl…she was taken in by the nuns and he was overjoyed, they were both saved. The first time he told this, it ended there, the second time, he went on. Later, something happened and she left, went to the streets, used heroin and called him desperate for money. He went to the brothel she was in, posed as a “john” and tried to get her out, but was stopped by a bouncer. He had to pay 14.000 to get her freedom and pay things up, to save her soul. He took her back to the convent and the Mother took her back. He ended with, “she is still there.”

I wondered though, is this common, do convents take in lost souls, even if they aren’t Christian? Do they just live there or do they become nuns? She didn’t seem to be one early on…so many questions cropped up afterwards, I wish I could have asked him. I also wondered how he got to keep such large amounts of money(to me) being in an order. Does anyone have info on Carmelites and their charism?
Thanks, some accuse Fr. Corapi of embelishing a bit, but I think this was true, just like him rescuing the priest hooked on crack from a crack house and had a gun pointed at him! I do hope he gets well and gets to write his bio…quite a read I’m sure. 🙂

I think Fr. Corapi is a powerful speaker, and I certainly hope he gets over whatever he has, but I seldom know what to believe when he tells these stories. In this case, I’m surprised he didn’t improve on the story further by making the young woman a failed Hollywood starlet or something (“someone you’d know”). I always know he’s getting ready to tell a whopper because he starts rubbing his face and pulling his beard.

But, when I heard the story I assumed that the girl in question had become Catholic and THEN joined the Carmelite monastery.

That is a good question of how he got the money, and how he happened to have it with him. Perhaps she predicted he’d need $14K to spring her? Perhaps he’s able to keep his speaking fees? He seems to have always lived alone, so I don’t know how his fees are split up between his order and his own personal expenses.

Yes, he does like to tell stories…the hollywood starlet “we would all know” has been used before. This story, I’m not saying can’t be true, but the coming and going in the convent and coming off heroin isn’t that easy. I know a now ex heroin addict and it’s a horrible detox…you really need professional help. He tried it once alone and thought he would die. Crack is awful too.Maybe he just shortened it quite a bit.
I thought Fr. corapi said he had to give money to the community but maybe he keeps an account…although he said he was so broke, he had a “miracle” praying for money to travel to Rome to go to the seminary and a friend called him with it. So…some things conflict, but maybe not with other info. The amount was high but in that neighborhood, it’s $$ to use and he lost it all that way.
I hope that woman, if she is with the Carmelites still, has quieted her demons.

I think he might mean it when he says “we would all know,” at least some of the time.

In the version of his conversion story that used to air on Ave Maria Radio, he did name names-and I do remember two of them. But when I bought his conversion story on CD-he said he doesn’t do that anymore.
