I am very happy to hear this. A great missionary. I have his biography - looking forward to it even more now.

Let us know what you think of it after you read it.

I am happy to see the Pope does not shy away from advancing the causes of the mission founders.

Yes, thanks - I’ll start it this week in honor of this event.
I just finished reading Fr Diomedi’s story of Indians in the Pacific Northwest. He was truly an amazing missionary, working non-stop for the conversion, sanctification and welfare of the Indian tribes. They loved him and their community grew and became so fruitful, that white gold-rush settlers got hired on the Indian farms - working for Indian bosses.

As it turns out, I framed a letter and few other documents for the group in town here that are working for the beatification of Padre Kino that wanted to deliver them to the Vatican. He remains a popular figure around here and has avoided any protests or calls to remove his statue. I drove by it the other day, someone had put a mask on his horse, but other than that the good Padre remained unmarred and intact. As a side note, every Christmas someone puts Santa hats on his horses ears.

And, as another side note, I also had the privilege of framing our bishop’s Apostolic Mandate from Pope Francis instating him as our bishop. It was done on real sheepskin vellum and it was really hard to get it to lay flat (it came tightly rolled) but as I told the bishop, “Hey, sheep aren’t flat.”

Thanks for that. A shepherd should know at least a little about his sheep. 😃

Related, in Sonora, South of Arizona, there is Kino Bay, Fr. Eusebio passed away in Magdalena de Kino.

It makes me wonder if his family helped establish settlements there. I had heard of Kino Bay or bahia Kino a long, long time ago.

Answering my own question, Bahia Kino was indeed named for Father Kino.

How interesting.

He was a Cartographer and Astronomer as well.
