Fr. Hopko makes it absolutely clear that the Pope would have to make it completely clear that the Holy Spirit does not Proceed from the Father and the Son and that no Catholic would be able to continue to think that The Holy Spirit Proceeds from the Son even if for pastoral reasons a parish or two were allowed to keep using the wrong Creed, it would be made clear to all of the parishioners that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father alone.This is from the paper “Roman Presidency and Christian Unity in our Time” (Woodstock Forum, September 25, 2005) by Father Thomas Hopko (an Orthodox priest):
What I find interesting about this quotation is that Fr. Hopko doesn’t absolutely insist on Catholics removing the filioque from the creed.
Any thoughts? (I direct this question primarily to Catholics and Orthodox, but Protestants are perfectly welcome to chime in as well.)
