I think I have reached I breaking point I didnt even know I was near.

Fr. Mark Goring was given a cease and desist letter from his superiors about his Cardinal Wuerl YouTube video and he took it down.

What do we do against these forces of evil? I have had enough.

Here is his plea to the Pope.

Fr. Mark Goring
I do not know what he has been told to cease, but having gone to his Facebook page, I see maybe why some intervention has occurred. Some of the things his “followers” say are horrific.

Peace be with you.

I hope you are not calling Fr. Goring’s superiors forces of evil.

Like us all Fr Goring has to live in obedience to his spiritual superiors .

I don’t know anything about him . But he needs to submit to his spiritual superiors .

I find the idea of speaking to the Holy Father via YouTube a bit odd .

Pray. Do penance. Be humble. Reject pride. Practice virtuous living. Practice serenity. Most importantly:

Trust in God and trust in His Holy Church!

I do not know who this priest is. I have never heard of him.

I have knowledge of his religious community, as two of its men were elevated to the episcopate and are now part of the Canadian Conference of Bishops. Happily, both seem to be good and impressive men.

I will limit myself by saying that, if he truly does not know what to do, as he professes in his video, and somehow finds himself reading this post: he should seek the counsel of those to whom he has made his vow of obedience and the senior priests of his own institute of perfection or to seek the counsel of his brothers who have been ordained bishops. That would be far more useful than making this video.

Indeed.
I do not know what he has been told to cease
From the start of his video, it would seem neither does he.

Heavenly Father, You know all things! You know Father Mark’s heart. The passion of his love for You is good. His direction concerning his righteous talks, about the scandal, is in question. Let Pope Francis hear his plea. Let the answer come for clarity. We are grateful for his ministry. Bless Father Mark.
In Jesus name
Amen

Brilliant in its simplicity. If we all fasted, prayed and gave alms as much as we complain, the situation would already be better than it is.

Fr. Goring apparently posted a video mobilizing his watchers to protest the inclusion of Cardinal Wuerl in the upcoming “Mass for Life” in DC. Since Wuerl is still the apostolic administrator of the archdiocese until a successor is named, he would generally be presiding at the Mass and protesters are demanding he not preside.

While I agree that it might be prudent for Wuerl to step out of the spotlight so as not to distract people from the pro-life focus, I don’t think a priest mounting a Youtube campaign against Wuerl is particularly good judgment and I am not surprised he was told to knock it off. The fact that he went on to post one long video about the virtues of obedience and now another video (the one on this thread) where he is wavering on just obeying what he was told to do does not bode well.

That seems to make sense.

This would be a good time for the inner Yoda. Obey, or do not obey. There is no try.

Is there a point at which priestly obedience to Diocesean superiors can be overridden in cases such as this or ones that are more extreme?

I’m not “culpable” in the slightest for abuse that took place without my knowledge or awareness and in many cases when I was a child or before I was born.

Nor am I “culpable” in the least for the fact that some priest I never heard of till this week has decided to make a big public protest and got in hot water with his superior.

“His ‘spiritual superiors’ are garbage”
Please don’t speak uncharitably concerning clergy- It’s against the forum rules you agreed to follow when you joined CAF.

your mention of Fr. James Martin is interesting, but a bit of a non sequitir- Martin (AFAIK) has not publically criticized his canonical superiors.

A better path for this priest may have been to privately address this issue with his Ordinary rather than instantly going public with an insubordinate video.

Max, I would think if someone’s life is in immediate danger, maybe the priest could follow his conscience and disobey to save a life, but he’d likely have to face the consequences of his disobedience.

I’m not seeing a life in danger here. Wuerl already resigned and enough other people are protesting his involvement in Mass for Life that this priest continuing to make videos about it is not adding anything new except drawing attention to himself. He furthermore has now gotten so much attention from this whole incident that he’s accomplished his goal of raising awareness in a big way. He’s not being a big whistleblower here, this is a publicly known situation. If Wuerl and the Pope aren’t interested in doing anything about it, it’s on them.

‘them’ - Ooh, the big, bad, scary, unnamed other…

Please, show me where my statements are heterodox - otherwise, don’t say I’m ‘as bad as them’

I wish to register that I am extremely disappointed in statements appearing in this thread which show a complete lack of deference and respect for the superiors of the institute of perfection, The Companions of the Cross, as well as for His Eminence, Cardinal Wuerl.

Well, I wouldn’t call Fr. Goring “evil,” but you can certainly pray that he recognizes the importance of obedience to his superiors.
