Does anyone have any credible first-hand information on Fr. Richard Fragomeni? He’s a nationally recognized speaker and author who is Associate Professor of Liturgy and Homiletics at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He is scheduled to speak at our parish for a Lenten mission, and our pastor is very excited and wants everyone to attend. A quick search on the internet has left me fairly discouraged. Some of what I found sent up “red flags” in the fidelity department (his name is on a list of dissenters). . . but there are others who claim he is faith-filled, inspiring, and full of integrity. I want to support the parish mission, but not if it’s going to endanger the faith of my family. Thank you.

I, too, would like an answer to this question. I am surprised that no one has responded.

I just came back from Los Angeles Religous Education Congress and attended Fr. Fragomeni workshop on going to the Altar with joy. It was a great workshop and in line with the Mass.
Then came the red flags. I was given a list of priest, sisters, and lay speakers who are going away from the Churches’ teachings on homesexuality…in other words are “supposed” to be in support of an all inclusive church that supports a homesexual relationship.
I have never heard of this priest nor do I know if all the facts from this paper are true. Please don’t take what I post here as total fact. I am only sharing.
Congress was a shock to me, having never been there b4. But there iwas a definite “liberal” theme going on there. No mention of 40 days for life, the evil of abortion, no catechism of the Catholic Church. Instead it was various speakers giving feel good talks about an opening, all inclusive church.
Please pray for our priest and all religous. They are is need of our prayers

About twenty five years ago, I attended a required seminar in order to become a Eucharistic Minister (as it was called at the time) in our parish in the Diocese of Arlington, VA. Fr. Fragomeni was the guest speaker and during his presentation he referred on several occasions to Our Lord as “SHE”, to the applause of most of the women in the audience. He comes from the ultra liberal Diocese of Albany, NY but apparently took a leave of absence from that diocese and moved to the Chicago Archdiocese, perhaps because he was a great admirer of Cardinal Bernardin, who has since passed on. My impression was that he was way off the charts on the liberal side of things.

Likewise I haven’t found much. However a short warning. Our Lord had dinners with the tax-collectors of his time (they were the presence of evil, very vicious). Through very odd circumstances, and over a number of years I have met homosexuals and couples of that sort and frankly I leave it to God to judge, not I. In fact I believe His Grace differs from our filters. As far as being real-catholic, I don’t see many families with parents in their 40/50s and 8 children anymore (I think one in my local parish), so judge those using contraceptives (outside of the rhythm-method, and good luck with that) as you do those with gay-tendencies. While at it remember our church thought biblically speaking the earth was the center of ‘space’, and almost put a magnificent man to death for declaring ‘No, we revolve around the sun’. Did it not also support slavery? Do I really need to say anymore. Why do I defend the gay members of our church? Well I was stranded in a community not to long ago, and they reached out to me…once a very religious-right individual. So I wish upon you to be stranded and see the love of Christ from those you thought anathema, as our Church unfortunately so declares of to many people, sects, etc.

I love our Church but see it has faults too, and unfortunately reconciles them way tooooo late. Like John Paul II apologizing for the WWII ridiculousness we did pertaining to Jews, we ignored them and more.

I once was as you, by finding my new found faith, very self-righteous… Peace.

The thing you should most be aware of with Fr. Fragomeni is more dangerous than any theological dispute. It is the fact that this man is a classic narcissist. What he does, and his whole career as a “celebrity priest” as he’s known, and his penchant for attaching himself to people with power or fame, real or perceived — is all about making him look good. His relationship with the Kennedy’s, and Arnold Schwartenegger, for example. That’s not about friendship, it’s about what it can do for him to be seen with them. It’s kind of pathetic.

But he cultivates adulation among acolytes — young priest, attractive young men in congregations, and women. Students, and the impressionable. He prances and manipulates, and in the end *— just watch him. Nothing is about Christ. It’s about HIM. Anyone who challenges this man is met with the kind of rage seen in borderline personalities. He covers it well. But many are on to him.

Watch him more as someone creating his private little world, his cult of admirers. Not as a theological threat. It’s all about HIM.

First, please check your diocese for its list of approved speakers.

I heard Father Fragomeni with his distasteful innuendoes about the Eucharist early in his career along with some mockery about the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and some liberal issues. He took us by surprise. Obviously, he is not on our current list of approved speakers.

I can understand how he became popular in certain areas of the country.

I’m appreciative of the (name removed by moderator)ut here on Fr. Fragomeni; he is going to be giving a mission at our parish during Lent. :o

Each Diocese will typically have an approved list of speakers. Make a simple phone call or mail a short note, with simple justification and even a reference to this forum. This will increase the awareness of the Bishop and his staff - they do not always realize the full background of their speakers…

Richard Fragmonei is not in union with Rome.

Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, where he holds a faculty position, is a highly Progressive school of Theology with an extremely liberal staff and that school is not in union with Rome.

When you hear that Richard Fragomeni is to speak in your diocese, ignore that little voice that inside that tells you not to do anything, say a prayer to the Holy Spirit for the strength of courage and write a short, simple respectful note to the Bishop.

Yours in Christ
Brian
