Fr. Richard McBrien: A Heretic?

I’m going to attend Notre Dame starting this fall (law school). When I get there, I have half a mind to talk to this chap. Is it a mortal sin to hit a priest? Would I have to confess to him afterwards? I am debating getting my Masters in Divinity in addition to my J.D. - this makes me wonder if the “Catholic” University of Notre Dame is the right school at which to study!"

Ryan, I know you are half-joking (In other words, I sympathize with your feelings and share them) but you know the true challenge for us a Catholic Christians is to hate the sin and love the sinner…could you talk with him without getting angry? I have to admit, I don’t think I could…he is in my prayers, though, as are you! Go forth and fight the good fight!

I ran out and and got his book “Catholicism” when it was a suggest read by a Jesuit Priest in our RCIA group, thanks to you guys it now sits gathering dust on a bookshelf. Sure I am out the money, then again my soul is much more important to me. Thanks CAF.

I would pray gently for him to his face a thousand times before I ever lifted a finger in anger. If/when I meet him, I plan on being polite and humble, but I do not plan on keeping my peace if the opportunity presents itself. I still think I may have to confess after the encounter, however…

Thank you for your prayers - as I plan to be a lawyer, I’m sure prayers for me are needed!!

IIRC, McBrien has mercifully retired, and is no longer the chair of the theology department at Notre Dame. He’s still a fave with the liberal secular media, though, because he says all the things they like to hear. The media hates Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular, so when you get some crackpot like McBrien that blats the type of stuff he does, the media eats it right up.

Old joke: Q: What do you get when you take one of Father McBrien’s classes at Notre Dame?

A: You get instructed in a religion that used to be Catholicism, taught by a guy who used to be a Catholic priest, at a school that used to be a Catholic university. 😉

Heh, I found a book by him (101 Responses to questions about the chruch, or something like that) a priest had given my wife when she first joined, we had a burning. Twas quite fun.
 
Even more troubling is that Father McBrien has signed on as a consultant for the making of the movie version of the Da Vinci Code. 😦

Yea, I went and checked my source again, I wondered if he may have been quoting White in the book, heh, I wouldn’t put it past fr.McBrien to quote an anti-Catholic to uphold his beliefs.

I wouldn’t be surprised if one of them was John Dominic Crossan…
 
My guess is that the Church fears that he might spark another radical, heretical movement as big as Protestantism if they were to formally excommunicate him. He has obviously already excommunicated himself spiritually. So, I guess the Church would probably try to silence him by putting him in certain jobs or positions that is virtually an excommunication.
 
Oh, I forgot to answer the question. Yes, he is a heretic even if it isn’t formally declared by the Church.

Both remarks from the two of you regarding the burning of another human being are appalling. Serious or in jest, it shows a lack of respect for the sanctity of human life and is in direct oppositiion to the teachings of Christ.

If you do indeed love God as your screen name implies, you must also know that a love of God is intertwined with a love of your neighbors. Suggesting that someone should be burned and asking for matches does not demonstrate love for anyone.

What? It’s our hope that the torment of the flames will give him a taste of hell and bring him to repentance. It’s worked before.

Any who, I do love the bugger, I’ll not burn him quite yet. But I do pray for his conversion.
 
When I was first getting interested in Catholicism several years back, I had the misfortune of picking up and buying a used copy of McBrien’s Vatican 2-era book called, “WHO IS A CATHOLIC?”
Just a cursory read of that book will convince anyone that McBrien is a total heretic. That book is now over 40 years old.
