With four days to go before likely dismissal from the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers and laicization by the Vatican, Fr. Roy Bourgeois has officially told his order he will not recant his support of women’s ordination.

Bourgeois announced his stand outside the Vatican’s Apostolic Nunciature in Washington during a Friday vigil attended by over a hundred of his supporters. He read aloud from a letter he sent that morning to Maryknoll superior general Fr. Edward Dougherty.

The longtime peace activist and founder of SOA Watch received a letter March 29 from Dougherty warning him of his dismissal. That letter gave him 15 days to “publicly recant” his support of women’s ordination before a second warning will be sent, followed by the forwarding of the case to the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith “with a request for laicization.”

In his formal letter of reply to his order Bourgeois says he cannot comply with Dougherty’s request for him to recant “without betraying my conscience.”

“In essence, you are telling me to lie and say I do not believe that God calls both men and women to the priesthood,” Bourgeois writes in the letter. “This I cannot do, therefore I will not recant.”

I hope the dismissal will be swift. I do not know much about this case, but if he truly believes this he belongs in the episcopal church. I am sure He will be received there.
I say this with no malice. Clearly he has views compatible with other traditions.

A local priest in this area has said many times that he is in favor of women priests, but as far as I know, he is still in good standing in the Church.

Okay, no offense, but shouldn’t clergy who publicly and adamantly oppose Church doctrine or dogma be excommunicated or disciplined in some other way? I would think that such clergy would have their preaching or clerical faculties removed.

Assuming the timeline stated in the article has been followed, then Fr. Bourgeois’s order has already sent a letter to the Vatican requesting that he be laicized.

If you google this guys name, this has been an issue with him for a very long time. If your local priest is a heretic then I say make a stink about it, video tape him making the comments and upload it to youtube, if he has it in writing scan it and post it online. What I am saying is expose heretics - don’t let the wolves creep around and steal sheep. Expose the wolf for what he is!!!

Any Priest that does not adhere to Church teachings should be:
  1. told of his error by you;
  2. if the heretical or schismatic action continues - you should report it to his Diocese Bishop, for correction. Provide any documentation that you may have.
  3. If he is not a Diocese Priest, report it to the head of his Order, which can be found on the internet.
  4. If that does not work, report it to the Vatican.
If the Priest is wrong and obstinate - he will be removed from his Priestly duties.

Important: Always use Documentation for accuracy.

In the case of women’s ordination:
CCC "1577 Only a baptized man (vir) validly receives sacred ordination.
The Lord Jesus chose men (viri) to form the college of the twelve apostles, and the apostles did the same when they chose collaborators to succeed them in their ministry.
The college of bishops, with whom the priests are united in the priesthood, makes the college of the twelve an ever-present and ever-active reality until Christ’s return. The Church recognizes herself to be bound by this choice made by the Lord himself. For this reason the ordination of women is not possible. "
