On The World Over program on EWTN the week of 9/11/2018, there was an episode of this program wherein Fr. George Rutler said there have been great scandals and turmoil in the Church about every 500 years. He thinks this is the worst scandal in the history of the Church.

That’s his opinion. I think there have been darker days than these…

He is absolutely right.

In past eras it would be either heresy of moral scandals. Today is the first time that the church is suffering on both fronts. The faith is being undermined by the clergy and their own lack of morals are causing great scandal to the church a whole.

It’s an all out assault on the church.

He didn’t phrase it as such to induce panic or despair, but he is right in that it’s worse than usual because of the two pronged problem. (3:50 in)

I suppose some church historians might disagree and could argue that there have been other crisis periods with both scandal and threat of corruption of the faith, but the seriousness of things shouldn’t be downplayed.

The late medieval period leading up to the Reformation wasn’t all incense and roses.

There was plenty of greed and corruption in the hierarchy at that time, but I do not think it rises to the level of scandal we see now.

That period does include the Borgias and the Avignon pope situation. It also includes the period of exhorting the uneducated laity on the salvation-for-money scheme.

To what extent the current, apparently widespread (ireland, Chile, USA, Italy so far) malpractices reach the late-medieval level it’ll take a future historian to decide. I agree it looks ugly so far, but it’s not my place to judge.
