Your reply about whether absolution was granted when the penitent did not hear words of absolution – begs a question I’ve been asking since last year.
Concerned that my Traditional priest would not arrive in time before my mother passed away, I called another Church (not traditional). The priest who responded prayed all of about 30 seconds. After she died, I asked him. The word “annoint” was not mentioned, but some reference was made to the Holy Spirit. He said these were the words used since the 70’s.
This annointing seemed more like a blessing than Last Rites. So, did my mother receive Last Rites or, ***more importantly, general absolution, ***at this most critical time for her soul? I can’t find the words anywhere online and feeling I failed my mother at what she would have wanted most upon her death. Based on your reply to another poster – if a penitent did not receive absolution without the words of absolution, then do the sick / dying receive same if words are not said? God bless you and thank you.
