Fr. Spitzer and Mysticism

I see this new show of EWTN. Called “Fr. Spitzer’s Universe” It’s a really nice show. He says that suffering and faith lead to Charity. Suffering and no faith to bitterness. Is he quoting someone? What is the “Way of illumination” and he mentioned several other “Way of…” things. It interests me.

Illuminative means that the soul is enlightened and experiences consolations and can feel the closeness of God in prayer.

Purgative is the way of suffering, and not experiencing the consolations of God while praying; a dark night of the soul.

Unitive Way is the close unity of the soul with God, and the foretaste of Heaven.

What exactly is “enlightenment” here? Feeling things? Feelings aren’t really good or bad they simply are. From my teachings. They can be deceiving too. And come from outside sources that aren’t always positive. So can thoughts.
