Over the past few years, France has won the reputation as being the leading anti-American voice of the Western world.* Of late, news has been trickling out of France which suggests that President Chirac has taken his opposition to the U.S. to a new level. One example includes allowing the pro-Ba’th pro-Saddam group “La Resistance” to operate out of Paris. The group’s main goal is to support killing U.S. troops in Iraq. (For more information visit comitesirak.free.fr/eng/why.htm).

Another example of anti-Americanism occurred less than two weeks ago when the French government hosted Lebanese Parliamentarian Walid Jumblatt, Head of the Progressive Socialist Party, who enjoyed an unprecedented state visit to France. As Ahmad Al-Jarallah, Editor in Chief of the Kuwaiti daily Al-Siyassah, reported on December 4th, “Walid Jumblatt…[was] recently given a send-off befitting a state leader at the Elysee Palace by French President Jacques Chirac.”* According to the Lebanese Daily Star, “Jumblatt’s visit to the French capital was considered by some political figures as historic, and as bringing him merit on the regional and international levels.”
*
This is significant because Jumblatt is known for his vehement anti-American statements and antagonistic stance toward the U.S.*On November, 19, 2003, it was reported that the State Department cancelled Jumblatt’s diplomatic visa following revelations that he expressed regret that Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz was not killed in a missile attack during a visit to Baghdad.
*
More recently, Jumblatt gave an interview to the Arabic London-based Saudi daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat on February 12, 2004, in which he said: “We are all happy when U.S. soldiers are killed [in Iraq] week in and week out. The killing of U.S. soldiers in Iraq is legitimate and obligatory.” The Progressive Socialist Party leader has also said he felt “great joy” at the destruction of the U.S. Space Shuttle Columbia in 2002, because it carried an Israeli astronaut.

And to think we (along with England) saved their butts in WW ll.

Memories seem to run very short in France.

I wonder, is this just the rantings of the government or are their citizens anti_American as well?

Quite frankly I’m starting to think that the French don’t care much about anything. Look how little they cared about their elderly during the deadly heat wave, they just took off out of the cities and left them on their own to suffer and die! Why then should they care what their goverment says about us here in the USA., as long as they don’t need us to save them yet again.

Well the French press for the most part sounds just like Chirac.

I thought that was supposed to be Michael Moore and/or the mainstream media…

I once met a french student. We got to talking and I finally asked him why the french were so nasty to others. He said “the french don’t like each other, so it is to much to ask that they like non-french people”. I still think that is one of the best explainations I have heard of french veniality and duplicity.

I was going to say the same thing. I went to Paris a few years ago and the French don’t even like eachother. Non-Parisiens are treated like scum.

When they all are bowing towards Mecca five times a day, lets see whom they beg for help.

There are many who would make the same generalization about New Yorkers… certainly it doesn’t apply to all Americans though.

I found the French to be quite nice, and surprisingly tolerant of my poor French language skills. But I was in Lyon, not Paris.

I always remember the piqued comment of Paul VI who once quipped, if there were two French Catholics left in the world, one of them would be packing to come to Rome to report the other.
😛

After the way Bush and his lackies treated the French prior to attacking Iraq, I don’t blame them for being upset. The neo-cons running our country seem to think they can bully anyone around that they want. It’s kind of refreshing to see a country with the guts to tell them to buzz off.

The French started their anti-American stuff way befor George Bush could even vote. DeGaule started it almost as soon as WW II was over. I take a different view and say good for Bush and the people who don’t give a whiff what the morally corrupt governments of France, Germany, Holland and much of the rest of Western Europe think of us.

France has been shown to be up to her Eiffel Tower top in under the table wheeling and dealing - her relationships and weapons deals have all come out - and now the oil for food scandal. I wouldn’t worry about any “ill treatment” from the US - they’ve made their own reputation in the world - now they can live with it.

Mr. Chirac has been accused so many times that he has had to pass special legislation to protect himself from prosecution while he serves the nation of France - whatta guy!

How are your English language skills? Would we be tolerant in New York? (Kidding, really just kidding!)

Oh, I see. Apparently that’s in contrast to our morally pristine government that promotes abortion and unjust wars throughout the world.

I have voiced my opinion about abortion being wrong and will continue to do so. You opinion and mine about the war in Iraq being unjust differ. I think Sadam was a threat to our security, there is no doubt he supported terrorism, at one time he had and used WMD’s, he murdered 10,000’s of his own countrymen and tried to have our president assonated. Why do you think it is unjust? Did you support our action in Bosnia? Why?

Bush lackies? Neo-cons? It seems as if the 55 million “neo-cons” have essentially told the ridiculous liberals to buss off. Stop listening to Michael Moore and get some perspective, chief.

Didn’t you get the memo? Wars are only justified if the Democrats start them. If a conservative President starts a war, there must be an agenda, like oil, or stock in Halliburton. Turn off Rush Limbaugh and get some perspective.

Huh, you think you know me, eh? Fahgedaboudit. Get outta heya or I’ll bust you in ya head.

I was in Paris for 5 days and had a delicious time. Never had a problem with the Parisians. They were couteous and polite, it was the other French non-Parisians they didn’t seem to care for. They even got a kick out of my last name as I went through customs.

Does it suprise you so much?? They are now the leading anti-Christian, in fact anti-religion, state in Europe and if they have their way with the constiution we, the other European states, will all find ourselves enforcing the French anti-religion stance simply because we will have given France and Germany complete power to dictate policy.
