France pilgrimage

I’m planning to take my 21-year-old daughter to France this summer (she’s graduating from college with majors in accounting and French; it’s my husband’s graduation gift to her). Two of the places we want to visit are Lourdes and Mont St. Michel. Have any of you made a pilgrimage to either of these places? Any recommendations on where to stay? We’re traveling by train, so access to public transportation is a factor.

There are literally hundreds of B&Bs and hotels in Lourdes. How much luxury are you looking for? I stayed in Hotel San Saveur (sp?), not bad but not exactly luxurious, nice food in the downstairs restaurant. You’ll want to book well in advance though as I’m not sure Lourdes has an ‘‘off season’’.

My wife and myself went to France on a pilgrimage with a tour group, back in 1998, it was awesome! We visited Paris, Lourdes, Lisieux(Home of St. Theresa) and Nevers,(where St. Bernadette’s Incorrupt body can be seen.)

Mont St. Michel is actually in Belgium.

We loved the trip so much, we plan to do it a gain in the near future.

We used a tour group, because we’re not experience travelers of Europe, and our French isn’t all that hot. However, God blessed us, and because of a fluke, we only had two other couples with us on the tour. So, the tour guides gave us exceptional treatment, especially around Paris.

If you can speak French well enough, you can probably do it on your own. However, the tour group we had, managed to get the best prices and the best hotels.

If you’ve never visited Europe, do a lot of home work on how the hotels are rated. A five star hotel doesn’t mean its the best. It means you get a full bath in your room. Other hotels, such as 3 star, you have to share a bathroom, which is down the hall from your room.

I’m also watching with much interest. My dear friend is going to Lourdes in July, and is anxious to know about B&B’s or other economic places to stay. She is a woman who does speak French, very recent convert, and will be traveling alone. Luxury is not an issue, more about safe and clean - and she loves to meet people

We stayed at the Saint Sauveur in Lourdes.

The price was good(ten years ago) and the food was excellent!

Its walking distance to the Grotto, and our room had a beautiful view of the Pyrenees Mountains.

They had a nice little café, that we would visit before retiring for the evening. They had wonderful pastries and other French goodies.

BTW, the hotel in Paris wasn’t so hot. It was run by Middle Eastern people, who had recently purchased the business. The rooms were too small and they lacked in cleanliness.
So, do your home work when looking for a hotel in Paris.

BTW, in Paris, there is the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal, where St Catherine Labouré’s incorrupt body is, as well as St. Vincent de Paul.

Also, there is the Basilica of Sacré Coeur, where St. Denis, is buried. Also this is on Montmartre, which is the highest point in Paris. Here you will find a large colony of artist. Be sure to take your time to see this! Wish I had purchased one of the paintings of the crucifixion, that my wife and myself were admiring.
