I have heard that the pontiff has said that certain aspects of Thomism is out of date or something to the like. What does he mean?

I think what you are probably referring to is this quote: The church has experienced times of brilliance, like that of Thomas Aquinas. But the church has lived also times of decline in its ability to think. For example, we must not confuse the genius of Thomas Aquinas with the age of decadent Thomist commentaries. Unfortunately, I studied philosophy from textbooks that came from decadent or largely bankrupt Thomism. I hope you can notice from this that he thinks Thomas Aquinas was a genius, not an outdated theologian. What he was criticizing was some of the Thomist theologians who came after St. Thomas. There was a period after St. Thomas where theologians bickered about something called the nominalist/universals controversy, and it is a widely acknowledged “down” period in the history of philosophy.

Oh I see. Yeah in what I’ve heard the term “bankrupt” was used.
 
Well then, it would be interesting, wouldn’t it, to know which of those bankrupt Thomists Pope Francis thinks we will not profit from reading?
