I know this is a great Catholic University, but is it specifically geared toward charismatics, or people that raise their hands during liturgies, etc.?

Would love to especially hear from alumni.

I’ve had 4 good friends go to Stueby. My impresion is that you get about 1/3 student body being very traditional, 1/3rd being charismatic, and 1/3rd being everything else. I’m sure there’s some alumns on here who can give you more accurate information, but that’s my impression.

That having been said: A true charismatic will be very strongly orthodox and traditional. So I’d claim there’s no reason to worry anyway 😃

I know plenty of “true charismatics” who are not traditional nor orthodox Catholics, but I think Steubenville attracts the more Catholic ones. Many Catholic charismatics are in communities that are not Catholic, but ecumenical.

a relative went there and i would drive up to attend the FOP (festivals of praise) that were absolutely amazing. the perfect blend of charasmatic and traditional: singing praised and worship and being on our knees in front of the blessed sacrament. i went 5 times in on year and i miss it so much. i have heard in this article: ezzo.info/Articles/neo_evangelizing_0.htm
that once upon a time Gary Ezzo’s work was very popular which is very scary to me, but that may not be the case anymore.

i am a traditional charasmatic so i wouldn’t worry about that at all.

What is a “traditional charismatic”? For that matter, can you explain the term “charismatic” a bit more?

Gee, I thought we were all Catholics in the same universal church. It seems now that everybody has to have a label.

i agree that labels are stupid but i was trying to help out the OP.

charasmatic-> i participate in healing prayer masses, services, i have been slain in the spirit, i often feel the Holy Spirit very strong during prayer

traditional-> i abide by all the teachings of the church as opposed to being a cafeteria Catholic, however i don’t equate that to being the same as conservative politically, i am an independent and sometimes don’t vote because i think both sides conflict my faith

i don’t think being charasmatic is for everyone, but at the same time some people are just so closed off to it and I think it is because they can’t allow themselves to go deep enough. it is a hard thing to be so open to the spirit, you have to deal with a lot of emotion and be willing to totally surrender

I know of a Catholic priest here in Baltimore ( a liberal) who laughs when he hears of anyone who is a student at Steubenville. He claims the school brainwashes their students.

It is very sad that the disease of liberalism even attacks our priests. He should be ashamed to ever say that. IMHO!

Must mean FUS must be doing something right.

My sister got her Masters there. We had a chance to visit and were very impressed by the reverence shown by the students.

At the opening of the school year mass, I saw a few people raise their hands (like in worship…) The music played were songs that you would hear on a contemporary Christian music radio station. I was a bit besides myself at first, ok, I was mortified. ( by the music, thats all.) The reverence shown was beautiful. The music just was not my cup of tea. I do think that some students car pool to a TLM every Sunday.
I did not attend mass in the chapel, the opening of the school year mass was in the Fieldhouse.
In my humble opinion, I don’t think the college is really geared toward charismatics.
My only complaint with the school is its location. Don’t get my wrong, its beautiful!!! (downtown steubenville not withstanding) In my short experiance there (a week), I felt so isolated on that hill. I was use to living in a city and walking everywhere.
but…Pittsburgh is pretty close.

All I know about it is that Scott Hahn is a professor there (or he was - not positive if he’s still there) - so that makes me give it a thumbs up 👍 lol, but i really don’t know anything more about it. It does seem to be one of the ones that is still quite Catholic…

Hey, I am an FUS alumna with two younger sisters who still attend.

I had an absolutely fantastic time at FUS. I am a more traditional person in general, so I didn’t really do a lot of the more charismatic stuff. The school has what is called “dynamic orthodoxy”… it is extremely orthodox and faithful to the Church’s teaching, but it does it in such a great way- you can really tell that the kids there take their faith seriously, as does the school.

There is perpetual Adoration, multiple daily Masses, confessions everynight (with lines out the door!), lots of groups to get involved with for spirituality, ministry, fellowship, you name it. The academics are on par with other univerisities, plus they offer great majors like Humanities and Catholic Culture and an awesome Theology program.

I majored in biology and minored in chemistry and found it challenging. I have a friend who was in the bio program with me who graduated summa cum laude and now is in med school and told me he was actually surprised how well prepared he was for med school with his Steubie background.

As for more traditional practices, there is a group who carpools to a Traditional Latin Mass every Sunday morning. I never went, but I have a friend who would go. There are also multiple parishes in town with a more traditional leaning, and all very faithful to the Church and supportive of the school. I personally went to St. Peter’s chuch in downtown Steubenville regularly- I was even married there and had my first son baptized there. It is a beautiful old gothic style church with an awesome priest and they use beautiful traditional organ music for the liturgy.

Steubenville definitely has charismatic roots, but there are a lot of more traditional students there now, so you can’t say it’s a charismatic school anymore. There are still charismatic events, like Born in the Spirit retreats, Festivals of Praise, and the like, but the day-to-day life of the school is just normal Catholic stuff. The Masses are normal Masses, the kids are very nice kids (well, you always get some"bad" ones, where ever you go)

Overall, I loved my experiences at FUS, and I miss it a lot. Dorm life was fun and there were rarely problems (other than just not getting along with your roomie), people are great and very helpful, the academics were challenging and fun, and the spirituality was so rewarding. I highly recommend FUS to any high schooler and parents of high schoolers.

Hopefully, I’ll be attending FUS next fall. I’ve already had an interview w/ my admissions counselor, and I submitted my application earlier this month. I plan to visit the campus this spring before making a final decision.

definition of charismatic catholic: a catholic who sings loud enough that he can actually hear himself. 😃

LOL:)

ihave to say this thread as made me really hunger for those Stubby U masses. They are so amazing

I’ve been thinking of taking a road trip up to Steubie. I went there in 94-95. It was the best/worst academic/personal year of my life. I was struggling with my faith like you wouldn’t believe, but I got all A’s and B’s in my theology classes. Well, except for Principles of Biblical Study II, the NT. I got a D in that which just proves the fundies right…

Anyway, I’ve wanted to close a circle, as it were. That was such a strange year. Philosophy and theology 24/7, I turned 21, I was so far from home and my folks had moved to Montana. I was about to embark on a whole new life in Montana…

Sorry, I was reminiscing. I think I’ll head up there soon.

For a well-adjusted sincere Catholic, there’s no better school. Oh, well, you’d better be rich or get a full scholarship, but still, it’s a great school.

I’m figuring out how to go there to get my Master’s in Theology after my children all graduate from high school in five years. This would involve selling my house near Seattle and moving to a place I’ve never been before and starting over. I’m hoping my youngest would want come with me and go to college there, too. Of course, it’s not too cool to go to school with your mom! Anyway, I can get a head start on my studies through their distance learning program.

I was a charismatic catholic for only a short time, the trouble was when I heard myself singing I knew my voice was not a gift from God but rather a message from Him that silence is golden.
