In response to the original poster, if you’re worried about charismatic people getting in your face, don’t.

I never was attracted to charismatic worship, as it touched my sarcasm bone, but I have very fond memories of my four years there. The religious spirit that imbues the place is phenomenal (sp?). Many students who don’t prefer going to the mass on campus, which is a both charismatic and features music that one can in charity call “cheesey,” go to mass at the Church in downtown Steubenville, St. Peters.

Eabe,

Excellent suggestion. I can’t remember if I mentioned it above or not (and I am too tired to check), but I was married in St. Peter’s parish in Steubenville and also had my first son baptized there. The parish has perpetual adoration and many other devotions. The music is excellent, they use the old organ and occasionally have guest violinists and such. The pastor, Monsignor George Yontz, is a very sweet old man. Dr. Mark Miravalle and Dr. Scott Hahn and their families are parishoners. Dr. Miravalle is a deacon there.

But at least TRY singing first. You might find you like it. 😉

EVERY catholic needs to give praising God in song a fair shake. Precious few around here actually do so. 😦

a relative went there and i would drive up to attend the FOP (festivals of praise) that were absolutely amazing. the perfect blend of charasmatic and traditional: singing praised and worship and being on our knees in front of the blessed sacrament. i went 5 times in on year and i miss it so much. i have heard in this article: ezzo.info/Articles/neo_evangelizing_0.htm
that once upon a time Gary Ezzo’s work was very popular which is very scary to me, but that may not be the case anymore.

i am a traditional charasmatic so i wouldn’t worry about that at all.
I went to FUS and attended some FOPs. They can be good, but if a non-Charismatic person attended they would probably be very scared! FOPs are just one element of campus life at FUS. We also have/had monthly Latin mass for the more traditionally oriented.

A lot of campus life centers around households (hh) – basically Catholic sororities/fraternities. You live together in the dorm or off campus and meet for weekly rosaries, Lord Day celebrations, daily mass or whatever your hh commitments are. Each hh has a different spiritual focus, so if you find the right one, you will be directed toward spiritual exercises that help you while being surrounded by like-minded people.

At the opening of the school year mass, I saw a few people raise their hands (like in worship…) The music played were songs that you would hear on a contemporary Christian music radio station. I was a bit besides myself at first, ok, I was mortified. ( by the music, thats all.) The reverence shown was beautiful. The music just was not my cup of tea. I do think that some students car pool to a TLM every Sunday.
I did not attend mass in the chapel, the opening of the school year mass was in the Fieldhouse.
In my humble opinion, I don’t think the college is really geared toward charismatics.
My only complaint with the school is its location. Don’t get my wrong, its beautiful!!! (downtown steubenville not withstanding) In my short experiance there (a week), I felt so isolated on that hill. I was use to living in a city and walking everywhere.
but…Pittsburgh is pretty close.
When I went to school there, there were three daily masses (and I think there still are). I usually attended the noon mass because of my schedule, which had more traditional church music. The 6:30am had no music and the 6:30pm mass had “charismatic” music.

I think FUS gets a reputation for being a charismatic school because there aren’t that many schools that support the charismatic lifestyle – which FUS does do. However, you can choose what events / masses you attend and tailor them to your spirituality. And yes, some students (especially seniors) go off campus to one of a couple surrounding parishes for Sunday mass.

I’ve always been puzzled. Why do charismatic Catholics and mega church prostestants raise both hands and arms in the air? Does that make them more holy? Does God or the Holy Spirit see them better? Or is it for the other peoples benefit? Not being sarcastic. Just want to know the reason.

because you can feel the Holy Spirit on your hands when doing so

Thanks, Cadet. I just wanted to know the reason. I’m always willing to learn something new.

no problem. i always used to wonder too and unless you’ve felt that i’m sure it looks goofy:) . i also experience that feeling when i’m praying over someone and laying hands on them. and sometimes when i hold my hands up during the Our Father at mass.

I think it also has something to do with abandoning your sense of self (and what you know looks goofy to others outside) and allowing yourself to praise God completely - including your physical body.
