The label “Traditional Franciscans” is incorrect. The Francisans of the Immaculate do have permission to celebrate the EF in conventual chapels. They also have permission to the use the Seraphic Breviary of 1960. In this regard, one may properly say that the a Traditionalists. However, this permission is granted by the Superiors General. They retain the authority to retract the permission. They’re not tied into the EF or the old Seraphic Breviary. However, right now, it seems to work well for them. As I say, “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.”

The idea of a “Traditional Franciscan” is a Franciscan who is faithful to the Franciscan Rule, Testament, Adomonitions, and Constitutions as they were written in 1223. There are some Franciscan communities that do not have to follow them as they were written. The Franciscans of the Immaculate are one of the ones who do not live by the the Testament, Admonitions and Constitutions of 1223. They do follow the Rule of 1223. They have an indult not to follow the rest. This would make you “non-traditional Franciscan” if there were such a word among Franciscans. We prefer to refer to each other by the names of our respective obediences.

While they are liturgically traditional, they are not traditional Franciscans. They have many dispensations from the ancient practices. Again, I repeat, this is OK, because it is granted by the Holy See. It just does not make you Traditional Franciscans.

They are very holy men and they have a wonderful ministry that is very necessary, because through the promotion of Marian devotion, they have brought many people back to the Catholic Church. Their work is bearing fruit. This is good.

For Traditional Franciscan spirituality and life one may look at the Franciscans of the Renewal, Capuchin Franciscans, Franciscan Brothers of Peace, Little Brothers of St. Francis, or Franciscans of the Primitive Observance.

The title of the threat is wrong. I would ask the OP to edit the title to something that reflect the Franciscans of the Immaculate and their use of the EF.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

Thank you Br. JR.

I meant in no way to misrepresent Traditional Franciscans. I will edit the title of the thread per the new information I just learned. The problem is, I’m a new user and I don’t now how to edit the titles of threads?
You can’t edit the title now. On some forums, you can go to the forum index, left click twice just to the left of the title and it will highlight. Then hit backspace and re-type. Then left click on the scroll bar or somewhere it won’t open a link.

You can try it, but I don’t think it will work.

Thank you Br. JR.
