mandatory choice for a seasonal visit for anyone who can get there, for that matter, any time of year is Christmas. also a great local beer. It is a lovely town even off the main drag, and a lovely area of the state. Rapidly losing its rural character due to a tax structure that militates against small farms and communities that traditionally depended upon them.

anybody in Michigan who thinks they have a good job is likely to find out in the near future that they have been mistaken.

Saginaw is an aging rust belt industrial city, with a future as bleak as any other such town. Michigan is my home state, and the most beautiful in the nation, IMO, and I would love to retire there, but she is entering into some hard times.

Gee, thanks- interesting advice from someone who doesn’t live here. Yes, things are bleak, but most of us are still working and there are many jobs that are more recession-proof than others (right now, those not in manufacturing or auto-related). Perhaps the OP has been offered such a job.

will hope for the best but only 2 in my family have been laid off from auto-industry related jobs. The rest who have been laid off, reduded to PT, or failing in their small businesses (which is all who still live there, at least 30 people) are in jobs that have nothing directly to do with cars, but who do depend on the income of others to keep their own concerns going, and that has gone south (literally). The repercussions are being felt and will be felt more drastically far beyond the auto industry.

WOW!!! Now you have me worried about all the people in Michigan!!! Where will they all go???

😉

two of my inlaws are coming down here, one is going to Costa Rica, and the rest are toughing it out.
Actually, my DH is very aware of the economy crisis hitting Michigan. I hate to say it, although that is probably why it is attractive (housing cost you know 🤷 ). Anyway, he is in a field that should not be affected. Has nothing to do with small businesses, factory, farming, or auto industry.

Thank you for the warning though!!!

OK, does anyone know if they get snow that covers your house there???
Winters have been less severe than usual, even in the north. Frankenmuth is not really in the snow belt. Average annual snowfall is 46". The heavy snow is off Lake Michigan – they can get over 100" in Muskegon.

we’ll stay right here.
people up the street just moved here from ohio for a new job.
10% unemployment still means that 90% of the people are working.
it’s of course not good for the 10% but the rest of us are doing fine.

The census report we looked at said they had 40 AA and 20 Asians, I can’t remember how many Hispanics they said.

Since we are adopting and are open to any race, that is kind of a concern for me
Do you know if Saginaw is more diverse?? If so does anyone know how far of a drive it is from Saginaw to Frankenmuth?
Saginaw is about 20-30 minute drive from Frankenmuth. Saginaw is more racially diverse, but there are many parts of town that are not so nice.

If you’re considering Saginaw, you could also consider Flint. It’s also racially diverse.

I’ve got TV on in the background and a commercial for Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland came on. I immediately thought of this thread. 😃

Flint’s crime rate is very high though.

In the area of Saginaw that’s racially diverse, it’s also high in crime.

I lived in Frankenmuth from about the age of 4-18 (I’m only 22 now). The town is first and foremost a tourist town, with festivals throughout the year. This can be very annoying if you actually live in town and have to go “downtown” through the tourist area during a busy time. There is no bad part of town, and some very nice parts of town. Crime rate is incredibly low, which is, of course, great for a variety of reasons. Coming from my perspective, the town is not a good place to raise a teenager at all due to the fact that there is no place to go in the town for good recreation year round. The town is also heavily Lutheran as was previously stated, but there is one Catholic Parish, which I have little experience with since I became Catholic in 2007 (I am a traditional type and this parish did not do it for me). As for weather, the town has seen its share of snow storms and a tornado destroyed a fair amount of homes in the 90’s, but overall it is not too bad weather wise.

All in all, if you can deal with the tourists and keep your kids involved and have a good support structure for them, it is safe, well maintained town to live in.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.
