My fear is that these surgeries and hormone treatments are not going to come to be seen for what they are soon. There was a time when frontal lobotomies were hailed as the great advance in psychiatry. Now this? Surely the day will come when the medical community will admit that surgical removal and alteration of healthy organs and giving powerful hormones not needed to treat any physical malady is a well-meant but wrong-headed disaster. When that day comes, Jenner and others like him will be pitied as the victims of this generation’s round of fashionable medical mistreatment.

Whoever is responsible for what this gender dysphoria patient has been doing, it is not exactly him. He has been mislead to believe that his public “transition” is inspiring, encouraging, and will be beneficial to others. Let us hope that this mistake in practice is soon recognized for the mistake that it is and abandoned in favor of something that will actually help people be contented and happy to live their actual gender.
Socialization is almost completely ignored with regard to sexuality these days. One would think after about a century of psychological therapy “to get at the root of your problem” that environmental influences would have been thrown out so readily, replaced by: “you feel it, so it must be right!” It has been pointed out that certain mental maladies exist in the cultural framework that recognizes them. Hysteria used to be a syndrome suffered by females in the 19th and early 20th century, treated by Freud. Anorexia didn’t exist when women were not considered beautiful if they were too thin. Gender dysphoria is recognized by many as similar to that, a distorted body image perception.

A person who has been applauded and hailed by the whole world as an athlete, might just have an inner voice inside him saying you are not good enough, something is wrong with you, you don’t deserve it. Body mutilation has its roots in a lack of self-acceptance. Therein lies the problem, getting to the root of why someone cannot accept himself as is.

In the past tomboys were allowed to play football but most of them eased into womanhood because of positive feedback from family and society in developing into their given physical identity. Health practitioners tell us we do not have to die from diseases that our ancestors did on account of their DNA and cite the effect of environment to mollify or even change bad tendencies.

There is nothing in Bruce Jenner’s appearance or athletic performance that would suggest anything but a generous helping of testosterone, many even more than most guys. So what’s left is the mind and attitude behind it. When society supports transitioning, this positive feedback will create new applicants that would have not existed before. Someone mentioned “eunuch” here. When I was growing up, this seemed like such a horror that could possibly never exist again due to its barbarity. Unfortunately, unseemly urges are not genetically screened out and every human being has to fight his moral battle as from the beginning. The only tool we have though is accumulated wisdom in culture and religion that should help us not to make the same mistakes as our forebears.
