Fraternal correction

I have a college aged relative who has recently gotten more into the Catholic faith. She used to like to drink alot. A few months ago we talked about ho intoxication is a sin, and willingly getting drunk, could be a mortal sin. They did not really seem to register it.

If we find that this person is still committing this sin, after giving the teachings of the church in charity , should i correct them again? Is it fraternal correction if they already knew the law in their head, but not in their hearts?

After a bit of discerning, I came to the conclusion that I would not force a conversation about her actions. I asked God for a chance to bring it up in a discussion, if God wanted me to do something. I think this is what God wants.

But, since I do not trust myself, is that a charitable thing to do?
 
The thing is, if you preach at her, you will alienate her and push her towards the opposite direction that you want her to be.

But, showing by example, and definitely taking the opportunity in a discussion is more likely to work, and is more likely to be received more positively. The more judgemental you are towards her, the further you will push her away.

Some people on this forum have used the strategy of “fraternal correction” with me, and the offensive manner in which they tried to get their point across pushed me far far far away from where they wanted me to be. And it’s unlikely to ever change again. Remember, coersion is not the same as “fraternal correction”. If the message is unwanted, or offensive to the receiver, it’s not going to be received well. You’ll have to find another way besides “in your face” to get her to see your side.

Prayers will do wonders Emily. Even St. Paul says that after giving fraternal correction then we should wait for the person to realize his/her mistake. Acceptance of the person for whoever he/she is, is vital.
