I wouldn’t recommend a face-to-face confession for your first time. Just keep in mind that everybody sins. God knows what you’ve done. If you willfully choose to withhold something, you’ll only feel worse afterwards instead of totally free. Don’t cheat yourself of liberation.

LOL! Yeah but the funny part is, even if your 1st Confession is behind-the-thing, the second time you see the priest face to face for something smaller, he might recognize your voice and knew that it was YOU in the first place!!

Though one time I heard of people trying to go to this one priest because he was hard-of-hearing! :rotfl:

If you do not entertain that thought; if you dismiss it immediately and do not flirt with it, embellish it, ruminate on it, then it is not a sin. It becomes a sin of thought when you spend time with it.
 
Oh man! you poor thing! I remember my first confession. it was a long time ago, I was 10! and I thought the priest was going to tell me that I was going to hell because I had stolen something! of course, he did not.

Well, I went on a retreat a while back and the prest there was a fromer navy chaplen. he said to us, “now, don’t be affraid, I was in the anvy and have heard it ALL! Don’t think you’ve invented a new sin. there truely is nothing new under the sun” then he said, “and don’t worry about us remembering your sins. we would need psychological help if we went around remembering sins.” he also said that there is a special grace given to priests by God that they forget whatever you told them the moment you leave the confessional! Don’t worry, you will be FINE! If I can make it through confession with some of the bad things I did when I left the church for a while, you can too! There is NO sin greater than God and His holy priests are so great! No fear! 🙂
God love you and your conformation is going to be so wonderful that when you recieve the Eukerest, you’ll be so glad you have a clean slate. it’ll be like your wedding night with the LORD!!! I’m excited for you!

Remember one thing Paris my friend.

When that priest hears you start off with the sign of the cross and then the words "Bless me Father for I have sinned. This is my first confession. He is already aware of what a big deal this is and the wide range of emotions that may be racing through your heart.

Make yourself a list if you like , but be sure that you weigh anything that you wish to confess by the standards of what it takes to commit a mortal sin.
1857 For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met:

“Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent.” If one of those three is missing, then it’s not a mortal sin and is forgiven by a simple Act of Contrition and/or reception of the Eucharist. That’s the reason that there is the pentiential rite at the beginning of every Mass…remember?

You’ll do fine little sister. Round up those mortal sins and take 'em to our Lord. Think of it as taking out the trash… I once heard a great description of confession as “whispering into the ear of Christ.” I like that.

I just went to confession last night and was completely freaked out too (at it wasn’t my first time). When I finished, I felt wonderful (I always do).

BTW: I always forget my sins when I get in there (my mind goes completely blank) so I write them down (along with the Act of Contrition, which I never seem to be able to remember).

You’ll do great! Picture your Guardian Angel right next to you with his/her hand on your shoulder! That always helps me!!
 
Paris, I shall remember you in my prayers tonight. Be sure to breathe tomorrow - don’t want you passing out! I’ve yet to go to Confession, but I can imagine that the joy afterwords will outweigh the nerves you’re going through now.

Hi Paris. (Glad to see you are nearing the end of your journey back to Christ 🙂 ) I went through exactly the same last friday. When i started THINKING about my confession i started to tremble. Remember that it is at this time, Satan will throw upon you all sorts of temptations. He cannot stand it when we make a proper confession.

The only way to say confession properly is to relax.

When you are with the priest do not fear anything. Take a deep deep breath, relax, look up and see only Christ, did i mention relax?

If you look up and see only Christ, then confession will be so much easier.

Christ knows all your sins. Give them to Him to wash away.

I know how amazingly nervewracking it is (believe me, Id done ALL the sins, including the cough cough ones), I recommend spending the night in prayer (not the whole THING, but an hour or two before bed). Arriving early and praying through the Rosary first is an excellent help.

But most of all, RELAX.

It is the hardest thing to do, but Im sure, when you come out tomorrow, you’ll be beaming with joy, and will have all sorts of advice for others, such as relaxing.

Please relax, your making me nervous and I’m not even in line to go:rotfl:
One thing to keep in mine that really helped me: start with your biggest SIN first, b/c once you get it out of the way the rest will be easier to confess!
Pray to the Holy Spirit to guide you and help you make a good confession.

It’s true, you will feel like the happiest person on earth, walking out of there knowing you don’t have a single mark on your soul.

Hello there Paris Blues…I can recall my First Confession and freaking out completely over it…nowadays I can still get nervous and I’ve found as with Post #2’s reply to you that to go into the Confessional and immediately tell Father you are a nervous over your First Confession is the best approach. Truth be known I guess for most of us the first time was ultra scarey!..and at times, tho now with long practise…one can get butterflies and I just tell Father I am nervous for some reason. Also and as with Post #2 if you feel more comfortable the screen between you and Father may be helpful.

Any completely new experience can be accompanied by anxiety, simply because it IS new and we do not know as a surety quite what to expect … and the imagination can be quite mischievious about the matter!

Well,I hope that with the Grace of God, He can speak within me so that I may confess everything that I need to confess. I hope our Lord takes away my anxiety (heck, my mind totally blanks when I go through anxiety) and I HOPE I will have the strongest courage and strength to WANT to tell all sins! Hope I feel strong.

…thought of a little written list?..you could make an examination of conscience or examen asking Jesus to help you, jot down your sins, and then thank Jesus after. If you are anxious about remembering everything, perhaps a list will help. I certainly have used this at times when going through some rough anxiety raising patches…in my own case, anxiety can make me forgetful…and it probably affects different people differently…

I was feeling a bit down this morning for some reason until I read your signature!..“the whole of Heaven rejoices over the return of the sinner”…actually I’m more the sinner, than Heaven and for sure…but my heart is dancing!..what a wonderful time this is for you and for us! Congratulations again! Welcome!
 
It’s kind of scary, but I find going to confession face to face helpful. If you feel comfortable enough with your priest, go in, he’ll know it’s your first confession and he’ll help lead you through it. Take a list if need be, pray beforehand and go for it! Just think, 24 hours from now it’ll all be over.

Being anxious before your first confession is normal…though when it’s all over, you’ll be amazed at the experience. One of the subconscious fears you may have right now is simply confronting your sins. That’s not fun. Remember this. Christ will be there in the confessional with you…not as judge and jury…but as redeemer. He’s there to tell you, I love you…I know you’re sorry for what you did…I don’t think you’re a bad person…I forgive you…go and try not to sin anymore…but if you do…come back and I’ll forgive you again and again and again. I love you. I love you so much I died for you…so bring your burdens to me…then come be with me in the Eucharist.

Well, our RCIA director gave us a paper with the Ten Commandments on and it lists about a billion things to examine within our conscience. The more I read them, the more I realize I think I committed every single one of them (except sexual stuff) the more I get anxious! :eek: I remember having a sense of maybe committing them but not too sure if I acted on them. I think that’s what gets me confused.

…we only have to confess serious sin, or mortal sin as it is called…our venial or minor sins are taken away in Holy Communion for one…otherwise I’d be keeping Father in Confession until the year 5000 I am sure. We can of course if we like mention minor sins too. I hope all this has been explained to you…sometimes I may go to Confession and I have not committed mortal sin, then I may mention my minor or venial sins…
You only need confess, as some other Poster mentioned, serious sin or mortal sin since Baptism. If you desire to confess all your sins, that is fine too…
I would not be overly concerned and a good move is to tell Father that you are very nervous and my experience is that Father then is most helpful and understanding. If one should forget a mortal sin…you can mention that in your next Confession. But I think a list perhaps helpful to you. And yes, it is quite ok to have a list…
