I heard something like when the church was powerful in Europe, they surpressed freedom of thought and speech and conscience against the Catholic Church.

Is this correct?

What does the Church teach on this?
 
What makes you think that they still aren’t? I mean, i think faith can be a good thing, but I see an awful lot of blind following going on around here.
 
The governments did stuff like this. the Church didn’t. the Catholic Church has always supported freedoms, but they aren’t absolute. LIke for example, freedom of religion isn’t absolute if it involves burning other humans as a sacrifice. Just an example. but the Catechism has written something that might answer your question (CCC 2298)
