In the midst of all the present and future hoop la and trumpeting about the upcoming World cup, soccer, to be held next year, please be aware that there is a dark and dangerous undercurrent in South African life. Another Catholic priest has just been murdered: the fourth this year. He was Fr Lous Blondel ,shot dead in his presbytery in DiepslootSouth Africa) during the night 6th/7th December 2009.by a gang of teenagers.Father Louis, 70, was member of the Missionaries of Africa, a French society of Catholic missionaries dedicated to serving the people of Africa.
Fr Blondel was an outstanding missionary, church builder and friend of the poor.
His fate has been shared by many South Africans this year, and in many previous years. People are afraid and , lawlessness rules in many areas. Johannesburg has been turned into an armed fortress. At present, a great effort is being made to present a façade of normality and peacefulness, in order to ensure that the crowds flock in to the cup tournament, but beyond that?

any idea as to why this poor man was killed? was it a racially or religiously motivated crime? were the youths looking for items to take, and shot the priest by accident?
i’m so sorry to hear about this… prayers for the Christians and non-Christians of Johannesburg, and for the salvation of more souls there.

The motive was robbery. Fr Blondel was shot as he opened the door of his room. There was nothing accidental about it. There is ,sadly, an element in the population there, as elsewhere, who have no regard for human life, and will kill without provocation.
