There is a particular sin that I have been struggling with and wish to be done with it forever. I confess this sin regularly and always feel so close to defeating it before I’ve fallen into it again.

Has anyone ever gone to confession so much over one thing to a point where you finally defeated it?

Ask your heavenly mother to help you in conquering this habitual sin, pray the rosary, it is a powerful tool in defeating sin.

God bless! 👍

I don’t have any mortal sins that I confess weekly, just lots of venial sins. I’ve not overcome any completely but I’ve made great progress!

If anyone regularly falls into mortal sin, my understanding is that it’s best to go to Confession frequently, perhaps even weekly, regardless of whether or not one is in a state of mortal sin.

If one is basically free of mortal sin, then it is perhaps common to be advised to go monthly, unless one is attempting to advance more rapidly in the development of certain virtues.

In other words, Yes, go to Confession often. 🙂

I go to confession every other week, occasionally every week when I’m having a lot of trouble with my sins. It is invaluable to defeating a sin, especially a habitual one.

I found that the only way that I could defeat a number of sins was by receiving God’s grace and forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation about once per week. God’s work through my priest really helped mw to overcome 90% of the sinful activity that I was discovering in my everyday life. Thank you Jesus!

May God bless you all abundantly and forever! 🙂

So frequent confession and the Rosary are my best options in trying to defeat a certain mortal sin of mine?

Please understand this sin isn’t an every day or weekly thing. But I would like to defeat it once and for all

Yup, those are your best bets. I always do better when I’m praying, doing daily readings, and having frequent confessions.

I’m going to try as best I can, thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut 🙂
Look for a 12 step program.

Statistically you are most likely to succeed when you have 1) psychological counseling to address the things in your past which cause the compulsion and help you through the physiological reasons for the compulsion (such as dopamine release in the brain), 2) spiritual help in the form of a spiritual director and frequenting the sacraments and, 3) accountability through a 12 step program such as SA, AA, NA, Alanon, etc.

The sacraments are not magic pills. They give us the strength to do the hard work we need to do. Sometimes that hard work is finding a counselor and humbling ourselves to admit that we are not in control of our addiction as they do in a 12 step program.

I speak from experience here.

I have started going to weekday Masses, actually just started this week. I am not going everyday, but I want to go a couple times. I feel like this is a good way to hinder sin from happening, because I yearn to receive Jesus in the Eucharist when I go to Mass. That seems to be another option that I am trying… so we will see where that goes…

Let’s be honest. We are talking about sexual sin.

Start being honest, get together with others who have been right where you are and won’t judge you, get accountable.

“I feel close to defeating it” isn’t going to work. You can’t do it on your own. In fact, it is likely to get worse on your own.

“I am powerless and need help” is the only thing that is going to work. Step 1 of the 12 steps is admitting that you have no control over your addiction.

Let me be honest here. It’s not a sexual sin.
