Fresh breath...

Is it true that you must have fresh breath before you can take the Eucharist? I can get “sewer” breath sometimes even after brushing teeth ( ) and I know you have to fast an hour before the Eucharist so mints are food so that wont do.

No. You are not required to smell good. It would be nice if you did, but if it is not possible, it does not matter. What matters more is the state of your soul. IT should smell good.

I am really getting concerned about your RCIA class, why can’t you ask these questions there? Other than for social reasons there is no such rule, you are going to be brushing your teeth and rinsing your mouth before you get dressed and go to Church, so what is the problem?

No, I didn’t hear it from RCIA, I heard it on EWTN. I think it was on Web of Faith but now I might’ve took it wrong. I think the priest said something like we should at least be dressed nice, brush teeth before Mass, clean breath, etc.

Paris -

As you know, there are some people out there who simply “were not raised right”, with manners and such. This is pure simple common sense. We prepare for Mass by making sure we are clean, have washed our hands and face and groomed ourselves.

I always have to remind my son to brush his teeth before we leave for Mass

As long as you don’t eat a large garlic and salami pizza before mass and after you brush your teeth, you should be fine (even if it is 2 hours berofe mass, forgo the garlic).

Paris…I think someone is just messing with you…I think they are leading you down the path of being over scrupulous. Don’t worry…it is the condition of your soul, not your breath, that matters.

I mentioned that to the deacon of our church…and he replied…if that were the case, I wouldn’t be able to distribute communion to about 1/5 of the people who approach the altar. God is more interested in the state of your soul, rather than your breath. Thanks be to God!
