OK, I hope to get this straight for once and for all as I’ve heard differring opinions.

There used to be an all year Friday meatless penance prior to Vatican II, not just during Lent. Then, I’m told it changed to there must be penance on every Friday during the year but you could choose what it was. Now I’ve heard that there is no manditory or “grave” responsability to do penance on each Friday.

Can someone please clear this up? What is the actual requirement today?

By this blog, my understanding is that there is no obligation to perform a penance on Fridays during the year other than those during Lent. Is this the understanding that others have?

You have an obligation to do some form of penance on Fridays during the year. Outside Lent you may choose your penance, although in a few countries not eating meat is a requirement.
With all due respect to the poster who gave us the link of Jimmy Akin what Jimmy says is his personal opinion. He does not speak for the Church.

The Church teaching:

CCC 1438 The seasons and days of penance in the course of the liturgical year (Lent, and each Friday in memory of the death of the Lord) are intense moments of the Church’s penitential practice. These times are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and fraternal sharing (charitable and missionary works).

With due respect, I did not claim that Jimmy Akin speaks for the Church.

I do claim that he does a masterful job of interpreting the discipline of the Church in the United States on this matter. If you disagree with that assessment, you may make your case.

And nowhere in that teaching can you find an obligation to do some form of penance on Fridays during the year.

one must read what the us conference of Bishops decreed and which was approved by Rome…the obligation to abstain was removed and nothing was substituted.

but of course Fridays remain what is said in the CCC quote…days of penance…even if not obligated here…

of course we are all encouraged!!! exhorted!!! and recommended to do something…but it does not seem to be an obligation at this time in the US.
