Friday penances

It is not the presence of fish which is to be penance, but the absence of flesh meat. If there is no flesh meat in your $20 to $40 fish entree, then of course it is a penance – The very penance prescribed by Canon 1251.
This is precisely the situation in which you can observe the letter of the law and make a mockery of its spirit.

There is no sense in which someone dining on caviar or other delicacies of haute cuisine is having a penitential meal in the sense that the Church intends.

You are correct, except in Lent and on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, when we are supposed to do the abstinence, not substitute something else.
The person you are addressing is not American.

She is to follow the directives of her Bishop in Canada, who has specified:
S.29 of Canada’s liturgical calendar, the Ordo, specifies that Fridays are special days of abstinence. This includes Fridays of Lent, although Catholics can substitute special acts of charity or piety on these days.
Americans are to follow the directives of the Bishop who has jurisdiction over the souls and the power of governance over them.

I appreciate yours and the other person’s correction about Canada.

When I responded, I could only see the first post in the thread, so the fact that she was in Canada did not appear until after my post was already up.

It’s unfortunate that the new forum does not show a person’ s location on the front of their post like the old one did. That was helpful in cases like these.

Yes…the only way I can do it is by the effort of my memory…which is not as reliable as it was in ages past.

Being European myself, I tend to focus my attention in a special way on those who also are not Americans as I find their mindsets and thought process are not influenced in the way that the Americans typically are.

I usually have to do this at work because my employer is a European company and people get a bit miffed if those of us from the USA don’t stop to think about the perspective of other countries.

Unfortunately, when not at work, I sometimes forget and revert to US-centrism.

Thanks for confirming, Father. Your memory is exceptionally good, may I add. Based on that paragraph, I just want to make sure, I do have ths option of giving up something else in place of meat, correct?

Today’s Homily was all about fishing, summer, dams. And poor old Jonah inside the belly of the fish.

Yes…you are correct. You can give up something else in place of meat.

The substitution, however, does not have to be giving up something.

You have multiple options since you can do an act of charity or an act of piety. You could do the Stations of the Cross or attend Mass or spend time before the Blessed Sacrament, for example.

I am in Canada, we don’t even have to abstain during Lent, just Ash Wednesday and Good friday
But you can still choose to as an option. Do the charitable thing and send me free moose jerky. Yes.

Same as religion. It comes up when you click on the avatar if filled in.

If you are a US resident then yes. You can say an extra Rosary for instance OR Visit The sick.

I try to do the traditional penance of abstaining from meat.

I try to go to Mass on Fridays. I also try to do some chore I hate. XD
