On Fridays during the 12 Days of Christmas, is one still required to make some kind of sacrifice, or are these requirements off like they are on feast days?

Yes. The requirement is still present on Fridays in the octave of Christmas. The day in the octave of Christmas doesn’t carry as much “weight” as a solemnity of a first class feast.

It would be interesting to see an answer from someone who is an expert on the liturgical calendar.

The only possibility for a “Friday off” would be within the octave of Christmas since all the days in the octave are also treated as solemnities.

Does this help?

Contrary to the insinuation in the article you linked, the days within the Christmas octave are not all solemnities nor treated as such. They retain their appropriate liturgical rank. In fact, the feast days for the saints contain notes in the LOTH and the Missal that direct the celebration accordingly - they’re feasts unless there’s a local custom or the ordinary has elevated them to solemnity status.

The Friday within the octave of Christmas is not a solemnity. The only way you might be able to get out of doing penance within the octave of Friday this year is if your parish is under patronage of the Holy Innocents, which would make it a solemnity for you.

It depends where you live. I live in the UK, England to be precise. Our bishops’ conference has decreed that the Friday in the Christmas Octave is not observed as a day of penance. I stress that rule applies to my country. People elsewhere ought to check their own local requirements.
