I have a friend who is reading the book series His Dark Materials. I have not read these books, but I have read about them and know it is a very bad series that slanders childhood innoscense, God, and pretty much anything good.

I have tried warning my friend about this but I’m not good at making strong arguments especially since I haven’t even read the books and he says he wants to have an open mind. He is not Catholic either, so telling him the books are strongly anit-Catholic don’t phase him much.

I gave him some advice and e-mailed him this thread link: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=212909&highlight=Friend+reading+His+Dark+Materials

I was wondering if anyone had any good advice for me to help my friend.

Thank you and God bless.

Oh please, one should always read a book or watch a show before criticizing it. If you do not you can not know what you’re( talking about period. The only thing a person is doing by criticizing a show or a book without looking at it is just repeating someone else’s bigotries and prejudices.

Read the books first then decide for yourself if they are actually bad for you.

As for myself I never comment on a book or show that I haven’t seen or read.

It’s just silly to get worked up over something a person knows absolutely nothing about, and the only way to truly know about a show or a book is to examine it themselves.

You can know something about a book or movie without reading or seeing it. If you know that something in the book is bad why do you have to read it first to know that it is bad? If everyone who has seen a movie (including the creators) tells me that all this certain movie has in it is nudity, sex and gratuitous violence and has no redeeming qualities, why do I have to watch it before I can say it is a bad movie? When the author of the books says he wrote it to instill atheism in children, the villains are the Roman Catholic hierarchy and young teens save the world by “killing” God and having sex, why do I have to read through all of the garbage to be able to say it is garbage. Some things are so foul you don’t have to read them first, you can smell the stench from across the room. This is one of those cases.

Warn him that the later books in the series are atheist propaganda. A lot of people don’t know this.
