A Roman Catholic friend of mine may move to China to study economics and he’d like to know how to find canonical communities, even if this means meeting at someone’s home secretly. How can he contact with someone who can pass that kind of info? Maybe the dioceses of Hong Kong or Macau could pass him some info? Is there any Chinese Catholic out there to help him?

He’s not sure about the city yet, but Beijing and Shanghai are among possibilities. He knows basic Chinese.

In Suzhou, Jiangsu Sheng they have Kunshan Catholic Church. That’s near Shanghai.
I didn’t find anything for Beijing.

I’m also not in China or anything and just used masstimes.org

Other information:

The article is from 2011, but I imagine that the information couldn’t have changed much at all.

Essentially, the priest who wrote the column suggested that one need not assume that all priests affiliated with the Patriotic Church are hostile to the Vatican, and you may attend Mass there without worrying about your Mass obligations. If your friend understands basic Chinese, he could probably pick out the more “state-sponsored” messages.

Please advise your friend to read the link 1ke provided and not seek out the underground Church.

Agree to all. The underground church do not need extra persecution. He may be ready for martyrdom, but do not drag others into it.

Your friend puts anyone in that parish in danger. Very selfish to do so. Attend the official Church, as posted above that is perfectly okay.

A lot depends on which city you are in. I have a brother who lives in China. He lives in Nanjing, which has a bishop that is recognized by both Rome and Bejing. Therefore, all public Masses in that diocese are legitimate. In fact they have a regular Sunday English Mass that is said by a Welsh priest.

Likewise with Bejing. Archbishop Shan is recognized by both Rome and the Patriotic Church.

Sorry, I do not recommend anyone living in China at this time. North Korea will likely cause an Asian Pacific war and the US and China will be inevitably drawn into conflict.

I think that if your friend is going to China he should be discrete. In China the Church is under restrictions placed on it by the government. While there are some places where the bishops are recognized by the Holy See there are other places where its situation is irregular. It is very likely that your friend will be followed around by the Chinese police in their efforts to persecute the Church.

I lived in China and your friend should not seek an underground church. I was part of a very vibrant faith community. It is one of the things that I miss the most. Your friend will be surprised by the faith and reverence there. Feel free to PM me.
