I know I have asked a similar question about this topic but here it goes. If you have a best friend and they and there family uses Gods name in vein alot. What should I do. I have told him to not say it around me and my family. The problem is when I am with his family. What should I do? should I not see them again? is it sinful to be with them? I have started thinking after my last post was answered about family and this problem that I may be one of the only positive influences on them/him.

Thanks:)

Yes, that is possible, that you are a good influence for them. Did you also ask your best friend to kindly ask if his family to refrain from blasphemous language around you, or at least try to remember? If he’s your best friend and values your friendship, might he do this for you?

If any of the family do swear and use the Lord’s name in vain around you, be sure to think a little prayer of praise and love to God to make up for what they said. That’s prayer God wouldn’t otherwise have had from you in those moments because you’d have been thinking of something else or busy with your friend…so good can come out of even things that aren’t so good, if there is someone good like you around!

God bless you,

Trishie

Jesus associated with sinners, so I wouldn’t use someone saying God’s name in vain as a reason to avoid them.
However, I work at a secular university, and I tend to have a much higher tolerance for being around sin than some people do … if I didn’t, I couldn’t function 🙂 - and I’d have to stop associating with some really good people, who don’t know God the same way a serious Catholic might.

One thing you might try is whenever you see that friend, you might keep saying their name throughout the course of your visit, but say nothing after you call their name. If they get perturbed and ask why, you can tell them that this is what they are doing to God! 😃
