Hey guys I had some questions and need some advice. I have a friend that went to catechism all the way up to the last year, but left the last year and never got confirmed. I want to approach him to help him get back to catechism and to get confirmed. He is going to be 17 in January and he is to old to go back with grade 7’s. How would he be able to receive the sacrament of confirmation and how do I approach him on this. Thanks! God Bless.
 
He has to go through RCIA. I converted a couple years after my classmates were confirmed, so that’s what I did.
 
Hi. I suppose your friend was baptized and now is learning Catechism as a preparation to be confirmed.

It would be good for him to be confirmed after the preparation – one would always look forwards to be confirmed Christian.

It’s good that you care for him and want him confirmed. How you would approach him for this entirely depends on your relationship with him of course. The closer you are the more frank you can get. Explain to him the purpose of Confirmation - basically to strengthen his faith by the power of the Holy Spirit and to fight against the temptation of the Evil One. Beside it’s a step to the fullness in faith. But most effective of all and I think it will certainly touch him if you are willing to walk with him in all this. Show your support for him; that you are willing to accompany him to the Catechism class for his sake.

But if he is not to be confirmed along with the batches who are taking the same class - he still can be confirmed at any time later. We want to avoid all this because it will be inconvenient and how difficult it is to start all over again if we miss the first chance.

Pray for him and encourage him in his journey.

God bless you, you are a true evangelizer, in fact, most of the older teens who come back to us for Confirmation to so because a caring friend like you invited them. You can offer to go with him to the parish and inquire about adult classes for Confirmation, and if you are old enough and already confirmed, can stand as his sponsor, or at least be there for him during his preparation and give him the benefit of your experience. Every diocese has a process to bring Catholics to the sacraments who missed out during their school years for whatever reason. You might even want to call the parish first and find out the procedure so you can give him good information, but make sure you talk to the person in charge of Confirmation classes, not the secretary.
 
My problem is I think it wont be as easy as it seems because I dont have any spiritual authority over him because I am just like his same age. We are both only 16 so I find it hard to talk to him about it. Any advice, Thanks. God Bless!
 
Another thing is he is not trying to be confirmed. He has fallen away from the faith and I would like to try to bring him back. I have invited him to Mass, and have been praying for him. There is only so much I can do because some of it is up to his parents I think.

The adult class may have a minimum age of 18. The teachers of the adult class may not be cleared to work with children; 18 is the cut point here, and most places I think.
