Has anyone ever had to let a friend go because of the friend’s lifestyle or vices?
My friend has been staying with us in our home until she can get settled and find her own place. She just came back to FL from TX. And we hadn’t seen each other in a couple years.
During that time I’ve become a Catholic and am trying my best to grow in my faith and to follow God. I’ve always been the more conservative of the two of us. She’s always been the wilder gypsy one, moving from place to place, different jobs, etc.
I should start out by saying she’s an alcoholic. And she can’t help the drinking. She cleaned out our liquor cabinet that was fully stocked. In two weeks time. I felt so bad, I haven’t replaced anything because she could get very sick she drinks that much. And she’s been going out with a lot of guys (and even a woman) since she’s been here. She has slept with several of them and sometimes even sneaks them into our house. And she’s been posting nearly naked pictures of herself on myspace. And finally, she’s pretty casual about stealing. For example she bragged to me the other day that she had stolen a DVD from her dad but that it didn’t matter because he’d never notice. That really bothered me but all I thought to say to her was that she should give it back to him anyway. I’ve tried talking to her several times. Each time I think we’ve come to an agreement or understanding about NOT sneaking people in at night and having them sleep over, there’s another strange car in the driveway when I get home (I work 3rd shift).
Anyway, she is trying to move out. Hopefully. But I’m wondering if I should continue with this relationship or not. Is it something that I should be wary of, hurting her feelings? Or even worse, encouraging her to continue by not trying harder to get her to stop? All I’ve done so far is pray for her and encourage her to join AA. She really did seem interested.
