Has anyone ever had to let a friend go because of the friend’s lifestyle or vices?

My friend has been staying with us in our home until she can get settled and find her own place. She just came back to FL from TX. And we hadn’t seen each other in a couple years.

During that time I’ve become a Catholic and am trying my best to grow in my faith and to follow God. I’ve always been the more conservative of the two of us. She’s always been the wilder gypsy one, moving from place to place, different jobs, etc.

I should start out by saying she’s an alcoholic. And she can’t help the drinking. She cleaned out our liquor cabinet that was fully stocked. In two weeks time. I felt so bad, I haven’t replaced anything because she could get very sick she drinks that much. And she’s been going out with a lot of guys (and even a woman) since she’s been here. She has slept with several of them and sometimes even sneaks them into our house. And she’s been posting nearly naked pictures of herself on myspace. And finally, she’s pretty casual about stealing. For example she bragged to me the other day that she had stolen a DVD from her dad but that it didn’t matter because he’d never notice. That really bothered me but all I thought to say to her was that she should give it back to him anyway. I’ve tried talking to her several times. Each time I think we’ve come to an agreement or understanding about NOT sneaking people in at night and having them sleep over, there’s another strange car in the driveway when I get home (I work 3rd shift).

Anyway, she is trying to move out. Hopefully. But I’m wondering if I should continue with this relationship or not. Is it something that I should be wary of, hurting her feelings? Or even worse, encouraging her to continue by not trying harder to get her to stop? All I’ve done so far is pray for her and encourage her to join AA. She really did seem interested.

Being practical, you should distance yourself from her. If she is bringing strange men into your house, you might not be safe. If she steals, chances are the people she associates with do, too. She is taking advantage of you. A good house guest repsects house rules.

Ask her to leave, and take a week’s vacation, if you can, to make it a little more difficult for her to bring men in. Change your locks when she leaves. She can go live with her dad if she has to.

This woman is not your friend, not the one you remember. Let her go, and continue to pray for her. The longer she stays, the harder it will be to get her out. Have someone with you when you ask her to leave, give her a deadline, and have someone there when she leaves. You will be doing her a bigger favor than anyone realizes; right now, you are enabling her bad behavior. Maybe you can go to an Al Anon meeting to understand this situation better. Good luck.

Clearly from what you wrote she is not trying to improve herself while she is staying with you. Is she going to job interviews, AA meetings, and so on? It doesnt sound like it.
You have offered her kindness and she has repaid you by breaking your rules. A definition of friendship is* a term used to denote co-operative and supportive behavior between two or more beings *but she doesnt think this way and is just using you. Kick her out into rehab, and change the locks before something bad happens. In particular Im concerned about the strange people she is bringing in. What if they steal from you? What if one drops a cigarette in the bed and burns the house down? What if one of the men is on drugs or something and attacks you? Kick her into rehab if possible, out at any rate and change the locks.

Well, I was the friend who was LET go and I can assure you that it is the BEST thing you can do for both her and yourself. My best friend finally gave me the boot after putting up with my nonsense for 35 YEARS! God bless her for hanging in so long! It wasn’t until after she, and everyone else, showed me the door that I finally got my act together.

It’s an act of mercy.

Thank you all for the replies it really does help. By helping her, I’m really hurting her. I will check out Alanon, there are several meetings here in Orlando.

Especially yours, blessedtoo. I really hope that this will be a positive turn for her, too.

God bless you all and thank you so much!
